John Dawson Winter III was the best blues slide player ever.

I am lucky to have seen him play.

One of my biggest influences, and of course the reason I bought an Erlwine Lazer.

Sad Indeed. Man, as a kid I played the grooves out of "Still Alive and Well", his 1973 release. Saw him live in the early 90's, besides being full of machine gun fast riffs, he just bent the hell out the strings...

I was working in a music store in Brooklyn. We were one of the first Music Man dealers. Johnny came in one day to play them...he had a purple Les Paul and put his face about 2" from the front panel to adjust the controls.
He bought a 410-130( I believe it was the one he always used) and a 210-130(never saw him use that) He gave me his autograph thru the prodding of the owner of the store...still have it home....He was a wonderful player with a immediately recognizeable tone and style. I was always pissed that radio stations would only seem to play Rick Derringers version of Rock'N rOll hootchie Koo and not the Johnny Winter And version(ok I know Rick wrote the tune). Johnny version is superior..IMHO.

...and he always got "his sound" from whatever he played. One listen and you knew who it was, which shows just how iconic he was.

He's playing an old Epi here looks like, love this version..."Be Careful With A Fool".

A real Texas original too. I've always looked up to Johnny and was honored to see him even if it was only after his years of hard living had more than caught up with him. So cool that he was still pushing himself to tour and I believe he was truly enjoying himself up there. RIP Johnny.

Got home early and been listening to JW all day. Second only to Jimi in my book. If you've never seen JW at Rockpalast 1979 Essen now would be a good time, the dvd seems unavailable, it's in parts on youtube, but whole on the torrents. Plus he seems to be the only one to have figured out what to do with a Firebired and he was a fan of Epi Wilshers. Wish I had an Epi Wilshire. RIP
