From Steve at ApexJR. Man what a deal! 22 cents a foot for teflon insulated solid core. He was easy to deal with over the phone as well. I know a lot of guys here use him, but for anyone who hasnt you should really check it out!

Indeed. Reportedly Nikola Tesla bought his wire from Steve. Teflon wire has resisted all of my attempts to burn it via overheating. The same cannot be said for the things the wire is connected to.beasleybodyshop wrote:From Steve at ApexJR. Man what a deal! 22 cents a foot for teflon insulated solid core. His cheap/good electrolytics are great too.

Yes, I love ze teflon, however it is a bitch to strip. Any ponying up for one of those thermal stripper jobbies is not my bag, but my rumspringa Dumble build demands the best i can afford, lol.lord preset wrote:Indeed. No need for complexity and cost. Get yourself one of these. Strips teflon perfectly and easily; very clean cuts:

Don't need thermal strippers for Teflon, just a pair of clacking strippers with well built and sharp jaws. I don't know where to get these cheap, but I'll be damned if they don't work flawlessly on Teflon..

Colossal, I use those all the time for my normal wiring misadventures. Good to know that others use them on teflon too.

Re: Just bought a whole mess of wire...
I LOVE the 22awg solid core teflon that I bought from Steve - great wire and it strips as easy as can be. I just bought a batch of 20awg solid core teflon from him a month or so back, though, and I can't strip it to save my life. I even bought a set of teflon rated thermal strippers because I was so frustrated with it and that damn wire still won't strip. It is like the teflon insulation is stuck to the core so you can't pull it off once you cut around the insulation. It's probably headed for the bin b/c building is no fun when you're fighting to work with your materials.

i like Klein brand tools, then again i was an electrician... may have biased me *rimshot*
i got two sizes, big and small. big stripper goes down to like 8 awg and the smaller one goes up to 26 awg. i can strip anything. (insert tasteful humor)
good luck Mr Beasley!! talk to you laterz

Re: Just bought a whole mess of wire...
Yeah I also bought the Imperial wire stripper.
I primarily use stranded Teflon wire and it works great for that.

Re: Just bought a whole mess of wire...
Like I posted earlier, I have a very reliable set of automatic strippers that work beautifully on regular wire, but don't appear to like the teflon, even with adjustments. They were free from a previous employer, which is a bit better than $288. I'm successfully using the suggestions to roll the wire across a single edged razor blade, even with my club thumbs. Whatever it takes, right?
+1 on the plug for Steve at Apex Jr. Good products and prices, and easy to deal with.

Re: Just bought a whole mess of wire...
Yes those auto strippers can't grip the jacket because Teflon is very slippery.
Thermal strippers apparently work but are very expensive.

I like Knipex tools, but I'm biased. We carry them at work.

Re: Just bought a whole mess of wire...
They are quite expensive, much more so than I thought they would be. I've posted pics of my clackers before, I inherited a clean pair from my dad but obviously not everyone has that luxury. But I'll be damned if they don't strip teflon wire beautifully. The ones I posted here seem to have some sort of "grit pad" on the grabber section which I presume will help keep the teflon from slipping while you strip it. However I've rarely had issues with the teflon wire slipping from the grabber section once the cutters have pierced the insulator.beasleybodyshop wrote:Damn Cliff, those arent cheap indeed, but they look mighty fancy!Cliff Schecht wrote:Don't need thermal strippers for Teflon, just a pair of clacking strippers with well built and sharp jaws. With that said, the teflon coated wire with very thin insulation is just a bear to strip. I don't like my insulators that thin anyways and avoid teflon for the most part, but I have a crap ton of pre-twisted red/black teflon wire that I use almost religiously for my preamp and smaller power amp heater wiring.

I guess I got lucky. I use his solid core teflon coated wire all the time and the cheap-ass pair of wire strippers I bought (in conjunction with a whole bunch of other cheap-ass tools), strips teflon like butter. Everything from 18 - 22 guage. Never had the slightest problem. Go figure.
