Any vegetable gardeners here?
I've got a small plot, about 8'x12'. I live on a well treed lot, so direct sun time is probably just under 8 hours. That's barely enough. I also have deer (inside city limits!) hence the fence. I usually engage in acts of futility. My labors typically produce some meager pleasures. This year, I think rain and compost have created sci-fi level weirdness...the vegetables take over...I'm really pumped. I think first tomatoes will be ready in about 2 days!

Any other vegetable gardeners? Show your stuff!
(Actually, I've got tomatoes, cukes, zuchs, and green beans. AFAIK, these are all technically fruits.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit
Edit: I hope our friends down under aren't feeling offended. Please post yours in six months!

I have 3.5 x 8 plot of bush and pole beans, half of it is dedicated to the pole beans which are 4 rows in a trellis arch. Also have 8-9 tomato plants and few cuke plants. However, I have more peppers than you can shake a stick at; long slim cayenne, cubanelles, chilli, thai hot, thai dragon, holy molle, jalapeño, green and red sweet peppers.
Last year I grew Tabasco peppers and gave away bottles of hot pepper vinegar that I made. It is the ticket for eastern NC style bar-b-q.

We had gardens anywhere from a couple of tomato plants to most of our largish yard. We've grown just about everything but the staples are squash - zucs & crook neck, maters, bell peppers, green beans and etc. But the bigger years had okra, eggplants and so on.
This year we're just doing maters. We laid off last year; it was getting to be too much. But my wife cannot go without fresh maters (you should hear her describing what the grocery store has). So, we got maters.
I do love get dirt all up under my fingernails, the aroma is without equal. But working 7 days a week while building a good size patio / fire pit / bar, not to mention amps. They take a rear seat of course.
Good luck with your soil. Hope you get a bumper crop, it does look nice.

Yep, we have a little 10x20 plot in the backyard.
Three different tomato varieties, two pepper plants, eggplant, bush beans and strawberrys.
We also have three blueberry bushes that are loaded this year.
We down sized this year to avoid over crowding.
Love the fresh produce!

Yes we have a good size veggie garden in at the lake home and flower garden at the main home.
Weeded and tilled the veggie garden yesterday. I had to high fence it in because the deer and moose love it too. A moose scared my wife yesterday morning it was bellering and crashing through the trees.
Could most likely just walk through or over the tall fence.

I have a small plot out back...it's planted with extra thick bacon.

I imagine moose are hard to defend against, as big as they are. My fence is only 5' high and only one time did a deer get inside. I have a theory that the green mesh (1" square plastic) somehow confuses the deer so they don't bother it. BTW, that one time, several years ago was the first year of that location and I believe the deer knew what was inside, and it was pretty bad after that deer left. Since then, knock on wood, it's been working. I still find deer poop in my yard regularly, but not too close to the garden.M Fowler wrote: had to high fence it in because the deer and moose love it too. I worry, the green beans and the cukes are already starting to take over the fence. I can almost picture the deer nibbling whatever grows through, and who knows where that might lead!

Re: Any vegetable gardeners here?
yep me too....20x20 plot or a bit larger. come 2-3 weeks I should be able to stop buying grocery store vegis entirely for the rest of summer.
tomatos, green peppers, broc, cauli, cabbage, beets, carrots, kale, spinach, onions, garlic, taters, zuch, herbs, and other stuff.
cant stand the maters at the grocery store - the marina tastes so NOT grama's recipe - even when you use grams recipe! gotta have the goods to do the cooking

it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds
Re: Any vegetable gardeners here?
I used to have a huge garden after getting 200$ water bills for a couple months I decided it was completely stupid and not worth it. We have a farmers market and a produce stand that has outstanding veggies. You can buy a lot of maters for 200 bucks
Now I just have 8 mater plants some habaneros Fresno's jalapeños chocolate bells.
I only grow heirloom tomatoes . bush beans cukes and some tomatillas that sprouted up on there own.
We can salsa and beans.

Carrots, actually, are a vegetable, not a fruit.
