On July 3rd I decided to, as they say, bite the bullet! I ordered a bass amp head. This is what is said about that amp head: new high-end line that is made exclusively in the U.S., a variety of upgrades & evolutionary changes, upgraded tubes, each tube is tested & matched, they have increased the printed circuit board to a thickness of 1.6mm using a 2 layer board with through-hole plating & increased the copper weight. After construction & extensive sub-assembly tests, each product undergoes an extensive QC process at the factory, including thorough tests of each amp stage, a 4 hour burn-in, and a final play test with an experienced staff player. The way I understand it, they only make so many a year & per order. These amps are apparently, personally built & hand wired by 1 guy in a custom shop & then played by that person before leaving the shop (per a youtube video). I did finally receive my new head...not 1 but 2. The 1st one came and I had issues with it. I talked to people I bought it from & they were kind enough to send me a shipping label so I could send that one back & they ordered me a 2nd one. I eventually received the 2nd head...low & behold, that one didn't work properly either. I had a whole new set of tubes send to me, I installed them but still had issues. I ended up sending it to a warranty repair shop to get this brand new head "fixed"!! The repairman went through it & checked all kinds of solder connections & resoldered where he felt necessary. He did actually find a resistor that he said one end wasn't soldered at all. It is supposedly fixed & on it's way back to me. So, this kick-ass head I ordered on July 3rd, I think I will finally get to play it this weekend - Nov.29th!! On a good note though...everybody I talked to & worked with through this whole process were very polite, concerned & did all that they could to make the situation right for me. I also read a lot of reviews & forums on this head & didn't see that these issues were a common problem...Just "my luck" I guess!!!

Amp buying experience for local guy
I've known this bass player since I was a kid and he knows I build tube amps, he didn't talk to me before buying:) I wonder which brand he bought?

Re: Amp buying experience for local guy
they got bought out by Loud Technologies along with Mackie, Alvarez, and St Louis Music and went straight into the shitter. I think Mackie is all Chinese now. St Louis and Alvarez are finally on their own again and digging out. We were one of the biggest Alvarez dealers at one time, great guitars at great prices. Then Loud switched all their manufacturers and they went to crap. They are getting better but prices got a bit high like everything else.M Fowler wrote:Just googled the description and it was Ampeg!
Re: Amp buying experience for local guy
Back in the 90's when I had a shop, one of the local dealers brought me a NEW Ampeg (by St Louis Music) bass amp. It wasn't working at all.
Took it apart and started checking the schematic. Only took a few minutes to see that two IDENTICAL molex wire connector plugs had been each connected to the wrong socket. Reversed them and the amp worked fine.
I guess "quality control" wasn't their forte, and the spirit lives on!

Re: Amp buying experience for local guy
My bass player friend did something similar recently...he bought a Freddy Krueger. He shows up to rehearsal...it intermittently works. I wanna rehearse, so I open it up and repair an unsoldered dropping string resistor. Amp sounds pretty good, but the design is stoopid. Pretty cool concept of motorized pots...they actually allow you to choose one of TWO presets! Two is better than one, but WTF? Thanks for the governor on my Shelby Cobra.
