My office is in the Washington Convention Center, so it gets weird in the building from time to time. Today was one of those times. Sakura Con is a conference for Japanese Anime fans, where many dress up in character for the event.
I'm not going to post pictures, but go to Google, click images, and type "Sakura Con."
It's easy for me as an old guy to make fun of them. For ever person in a costume, there was some geeky guy that has probably not yet kissed a girl.
But you know what? When I was growing up in the south in the sixties and seventies, I would have my assed kicked for shit like this.
So I'm glad society has evolved enough to say "Let your freak flag fly."
Sometimes, people might look stupid to you, but rather than deride them, remember some words from Jimi; "I'm the one that has to die, when it is time for me to die, so let me live my life they way I want to."

My wife and kids went to Comic-con there a few weeks ago. That's weird enough for me.....they made me stay home.

Did go to Hot Java Cool Jazz at the Paramount last Friday. More my speed. Holy shit!!!! Those kids can swing!

I figure you're referring to Cosplay, the activity of dressing as one's favorite anime, Star Wars, superhero or fantasy character. Some of the efforts put into building these costumes would rival that of many amp builds on this site! I wish it had been available to me when I was young.
I'm glad these people have the opportunity to pursue this activity. Like you, I grew up in the South during the 60's and 70's. Whenever I used to talk to my parents or other family members about Star Trek or my favorite fantasy writer H.P. Lovecraft, I could always see that look in their eye: "Gay...."
