Ampaholics anonymous?
Aside from the pros, who always have another build in the mill, is there anyone else here who is ambivalent about finishing an amp? I'm getting near the end of a 5B6 and I have real mixed feelings about finishing. On the one hand, it's always great to finish a build -- something very satisfying. On the other hand it is a let down because, well, there is no more building going on for a while. I build maybe one a year, two in a good year. There is something intrinsically rewarding about just having a project on the bench.
Is there a 12 step program out there for ampaholics?

When I run out of parts I get sad.
I keep forgetting little bits so I am slow. Hehe

I have gotten to the point where I always have a few amps on the bench.
Most are just waiting for tweeks / mods.
I start the next one before I finish the last.
My latest build will be my last, until I've cleared the back log.
Probably...

The sickness continues.

I've been saying we need a AA sub-forum forever, now everyone wants to hop on. Soon the tech sites will be empty except for noobes and we will all be discussing cookie recipes or tomato plants or worse crying over how our dysfunctional childhoods drove us to uncontrolled amp building.
Yeh running out of parts is the biggest bummer

But... but... I don't want to quit!
Besides, I don't think there's a patch for it.

Right! And if you are like me, most of that total is shipping charges. That's what kills me ..... order a dozen resistors and the shipping is three time more costly than the goods.

First you have to admit to yourself and others that you have a problem!sepulchre wrote:But... but... I don't want to quit!

Agree. Just before the amp is finished, it's in a Platonian state of perfection. The ideal amp, if you will. It has perfect tone, zero hiss and hum, and it plays itself. Never plug it in, and you won't be disappointed.

No kidding, so I end up ordering a bunch of other stuff to try to make the shipping worth it. Can't seem to anticipate the parts I'll need for that next decision though. Guess it's a good thing the parts houses don't sell guitars.NickC wrote:

Finished soldering that 5B6 today. Look for pictures soon in the Fender area, not in this thread. It could be a few days....I need another project...

The answer to keeping shipping costs in check...
Order in large quantities !
But the workbench disappears under a mountain of stuff.

More benches = more stuff.
I can tell looking at my wife that an intervention is coming...
But not yet
