I love the guy too.... he always sounds like he is talking with marbles in his mouth. Must have been into the "good" stuff back in the day.

Man when James Gang came out with Rides Again, that album was one of the ones that made me want to play guitar.
They actually came to my little town several times.
Funk #49 baby!

I love Joe, his music is always fun to listen to and play. And shit, what a great songwriter and guitar player.
He's also a big ham radio operator. I think my dad has caught him a few times on the air.

Guitar World did a nice interview with him in May of this year. Joe Walsh got his radio operator liscense back when you had to know tube electronics in order to get one. He is definitely a lot sharper than his on stage persona.
He has so much fun that it is pretty contageous.

I am a huge Joe Walsh fan too. Just love the guy. Never got to see him in the old days, but I've been lucky enough to have seen him 3 times in the past few years. Once for the JG reunion tour, and then twice doing his solo material. His songs are great, and his playing is world class. And like Lefty said, he just has fun (Buddy Guy is another one who always appears to have a lot of fun playing).
This last tour was very cool with some great new material along with the best of stuff - I'll go see him "Over and Over" again.

It's funny, my wife and I sometimes talk about what people you'd love to have for dinner. We both agree Joe would be an entertaining guest.
I've only got to see him once, about ten years ago at the Music Midtown festival in Atlanta. When he wasn't playing, he'd have the audience in stitches, and when he played he just killed.
Found a good interview. I didn't realize he gave Page the Les Paul:

I'd be surprised if Joe hasn't done some amp building, as I'm sure he knows his electronic theory. I remember listening to him on the ham bands once in the 80's, but didn't realize who it was at the time. I didn't know he was a ham until years later. I thought at the time I was listening to one of the Eagle's roadies or something. I've always hoped to run into him on the air sometime.
Joe knows good licks and good tone!

Tone Quest Report Dr Z
So you flipped the standby switch, so to speak, in ’90?

I continued to work my “day job” if you will until 1992, and that was the time when a lot of decisions were made for me. One of them was that Joe Walsh got one of my amps and took it out on an Eagles tour, and I thought, “Wow, I think I’ve got something!” At that time, I pretty much decided to direct my attention to building amps full time.

How did Joe get your amp?

Well, he lived in Cleveland and he attended Kent State and studied electronics. We knew each other, and we had crossed paths over the years—we even played in a battle of the bands together years ago. His band came in first and mine was second, which ought to tell you something. His former manager was a good friend of mine, and he thought Joe would dig my amp, so we met one night and Joe took the amp back to his hotel room and promptly pulled it all apart. I didn’t hear anything from him for about a year or a year and a half, and all of a sudden I got a call to make Joe another amp and a speaker cabinet. He needed a backup for the Eagles tour, and the rest is history.

Gibsonman, I realize now my link was to the article you were talking about.
Sounds like he's not only a great musician, but a standup guy. I mean, besides doing the James Gang, the solo work, contributing to probably the Eagles greatest album, he also gave Page that Les Paul, gave Townsend his signature tone for Who's Next, and helped launch Dr. Z's career.
Heck, I even loved his appearances on the Drew Cary show.
He also did this:

I'm think Joe Walsh wrote the forward to Craig Anderton's 'Electronic Projects for Musicians' - the one with all the pedal projects. I'm pretty sure he mentioned that he has an electronics background (college?) and dabbles with modding his gear - maybe he's a member here

Joe Cool, one of my heroes.
I knew he was a tech of some sorts from a very old GP interview where he talked
about Fender making their amps cleaner, and his mods.
This was back in the 70's.
I had the privilege of seeing him around 1983 in Rochester, NY.
Great show!

Re: Any Joe Walsh fans out there?
Very cool guy - I've never seen him live - yet.
The James Gang - Miami & Rides Again are 2 of my favorite albums.
"The smoker you drink, the player you get" about summed it up at the time.

Just saw Joe on Live From Daryls House and he played and sang great.
Also some cool guitars he's playing too.
Also too funny on the old Drew Carey show, Drew was trying to get Joe his own show he was that good!
See ya!
