....And now, Irene!
Tony Albany is evacuating his summer home in Delaware right now. I live on the West Coast, but I'm wondering how many of you on the East Coast are finding yourselves taking such precautions?
Good luck to all in Irene's path!

I'm in NE NC on the Virginia border; the Outer Banks of NC and the Sandbridge area of Va Beach have been ordered to evacuate. I'm prepared here and don't plan on leaving, however I think I'm sending the wife to stay with our oldest tomorrow.
Thanks David

it sucks that you guys have to go through that. Hurricanes are a pain along with the whole process of preparation or evacuation. Hope it just skips and avoids everyone.

Re: ....And now, Irene!
Some guy on the radio who purported to know what he was talking about said this storm may become the storm of the century if things continue as they are.
He said the Atlantic is the warmest it's been in a 100 years or so, that will charge up the storm.
New York may be in for quite a hit, as well as the southern states.

Word to the wise. If any of you east coast guys feel the need to evacuate, do it sooner rather than later.
I went to my parents ranch 130 miles north of Houston for Katrina. My normal 2.5 hour drive was 3.5 hours. Friends and family that waited were on the road for 24+ hours.

The biggest impact will be the rain after landfall is made. Thankfully the largest concentration of rain is on the eastern side (Ocean side) of the storm as shown on the satellite views. I've lived with these things all my life and yes, you don't want to get caught in the coastal areas when they make landfall, but the biggest risk is being isolated afterwards and not getting the assistance and care just like New Orleans and in South Florida. My county got hit by three in a row back in 2004 and while the eastern part of the county was torn up and without power and water for a month, I came through with only a 3 hour power outage. Never even lost my cable. Moving through the landfall area will be the biggest challenge.

We were 13 days without power after Ike. Come to find out, my wife has naturally wavey hair.

I lived in New Orleans in 1965 when Betsy hit.
A word of cautionary advice .... do not underestimate the power of a hurricane to end your life in mere seconds. This is serious ..... life-and-death serious .... stuff that is not to be messed with. Play it safe and get out of the path.
Best wishes to all that are in harms way. Be careful. Be safe.

Re: ....And now, Irene!
We have a good many old growth trees in our back yard. So now it is completely covered with tree limps and leaves. Nothing too big, just a bunch of smaller stuff. I live about 1 1/2 hrs. west of Philly, PA.
We got a lot of rain and wind, but seemed to have made it without anything catastrophic. And thank God, didn't loose our electricity this time. When Isabelle came through a few years ago, we were without power for a day and a half.
I hope everyone closer to the ocean made it through OK also.

Being on the Gulf Coast of Texas I have certainly been there. I hope you have Power and water and food. Be glad it's not 104 degrees on top of everything else. Here it is like camping out afterwards. We grill everybodys meat and enjoy our neighbors for a while.
I've got blisters on my fingers!
Re: ....And now, Irene!
I've got a story to tell. Tree through the roof, into the master bedroom where we were sleeping. Miraculously, we escaped injury. Furniture is unscathed. Some clothing is now trash. Electric (and internet) was out from just before it happened until this afternoon. Sorry, didn't mean to sidetrack this thread....
