Almost had a really bad night

Post by selloutrr »

HOLY SHIT!

I was playing hide and seek with my daughter which turns into tag where we run around the kitchen and play no tag backs. - Your it, your it, your it yout.. no tag backs run... All standard before bed hype up to crash down. It was all fine and good until I took a V line for the coffee table and we made a couple passes. The Little Red Bastard our irish terrior ( dog in my avatar ) wanted to play and tried to cut me off on the corner his head hit my knee with so much force it's been an hour and I can still feel it like it was a minute ago. About 30 seconds after the impact he locked up, fell over, and had a full on general seizure. It took forever to finally stop. the wifes freaking out the other dog is freaking out the kid is freaking out and it was my fault. Here I am pulling the other dog (80+lb) down the hall to crate him and trying to get the kid to go in her room in the event the LRB doesn't pull out of it. I draw a bath in the guest tub, check the water for cold drop the drain and go back he's still going at it. a few minutes later - what felt like forever he comes too and she insists on cooling him down. she carries him into the bath and the water was scalding hot... I've never used that bathroom but who the fuck put the sticker on the handle the wrong way? seriously!!!? who builds a house and does that? My contractor is getting a call after I finish this post to discuss this... The wife was yelling at me like was trying to boil the dog.. it's a dog it's not a king crab. In a last ditch effort to get her to calm down and willing to do whatever LRB needed. we took him outside and turned the hose on him. I'm soaked and waiting for the vet to call back so I can take him in for x rays, MRI, and a check up. It's probably nothing but he is getting older ( 8yrs ) so better safe then sorry. The last thing I need is to wake up to the wifes dog dead from a blood clot, fracture, or pressure in the brain because I didn't do everything I possible could to save him when I had the chance. It's only money, but damn I should have been a vet Fuck they are proud of themselves! But, If I don't it is probably a recipe for sleeping on the coach for a very long time.

That was one bad night.
When things go all pear shaped so fast like that, it seems things just won't stop going bad.
Having a terrier around is kind of like having a self destructing device in the house, it is mostly just a question of time. Really great dogs though! Hope the little one is OK.

Luckily he seems to be fine they didn't find anything wrong which is good news.
He's back to normal, a bit tired but I don't think he remembers what happened.
they think we hit in ear / temple area.

Glad to hear LRB is OK, and I hope everyone has calmed down & recovered.

Our worst problem has been trying to get the male cat back in the house before dark, he likes to stroll at dusk, but he's a gormless little bugger who's never seen a coyote.

Wow I hope the little bugger is OK.

It's scary when something like that happens.
We had an Italian Greyhound that was getting up in years and he was diagnosed with kidney failure.

We had to give him IV fluid (ringers lactate) to help flush his system out.
We were supposed to do this every night but it was really hard sticking that needle in his back, the poor little guy became very traumatized.

One night we skipped the routine to give him a break and later in the evening he seized.
I have never seen anything as terrible as that with one of our dogs.
He was shaking all over and fell over on his side and was biting his tongue.
All I could do was try to hold him.
Fortunately it only lasted about a minute but we felt really bad.
Sadly we had to make the ultimate choice and put him down a few weeks later.

I hope there is no permanent damage to your pooch, they are part of the family and it is terrifying when something goes wrong.

Our cat finally saw (at least) one. He, too, was on a curfew. Last seen at dusk chasing another cat over the fence - that was a couple years ago.

All the best to everyone - especially the four-legged ones.

So far he seems good a little wobbly and probably in pain so he's a tad bit on the needy side but I'm sure after seeing my knee this morning he's probably feeling like he got hit by a truck.

My Knee has a 3" x 1" black / blue and blood blistered under the skin wound from where we connected. talk about a heck of a blow. it hurts to bend.

LRB

Post by Bob S »

Pleased the little guy is ok. Seizures are very scary to see.
My wife had an old house cat (Booger). He never bothered with me, nor I him - I'm not a cat person. He bit my second toe while having a seizure.
It's not easy getting a cat off your toe while your wife is screaming at you.
Anyway - I hope LRB's recovery is swift & complete.

Don't take YOUR bruise lightly either. Look on WebMD or Mayo for treatment. Too bad you couldn't get ice on it quickly (other priorities, I know). Avoid Aspirin and Ibuprophen (both interfere with clotting) until that thing starts fading.

Hope this helps - and that LRB has learned to keep some distance.

yeah.. they just wanted to join in the fun. I probably should have known better then running around the house. I was a bad example.
Normally all I do is bitch and complain about LRB but I don't really want him to die, at least not like that. lol I mean maybe by my hands to make into a pair of boots 8) but not an accident. I could never live that down.

I could hear it now..
"Oh yes it's a cute puppy, we wouldn't need a puppy if you hadn't killed the dog."
"Don't let him play with your dog he might kill it"

So glad he pulled out of it.

The one thing I don't understand is the part about putting the dog in a tub of water?

Seems like that would traumatize him ever further.

My Vet said that we should just try to hold our dog and try to keep him from injuring himself.

if the seizure doesnt stop on it's own. you can often help by cooling them down. similar to putting ice on a ingury I guess?

if i understand it right the siezure is caused by the brain miss firing and not making connections. basicallly short circuiting firing faster and faster in hopes of making proper connection.. over heating. by cooling them down things can get back in alignment.

they don't remember anything that happens during the seizure. when he came too he was just hot, tired, and hungry. plus a bit confussed, it must be a lot like having your wisdom teeth out.

mostly it was what the wife told me to do and if he was going down i was sure as hell going to do whatever it took to not get blaimed for it.
