RUSH: Time Machine

Post by Cygnus X1 »

Show Time!

Hard to describe without getting into all of the cliches.
Just back from Euro leg of the tour they started off a little cold (half a song to warm up) but after that....not a complaint except for one: the incredible low tones generated on Geddy's synth were painful during Subdivisions and a couple other songs.
More than likey it was my seating...lower deck 2/3's back where the bass can bounce off the back wall on occasions.
But what a synth it is!

I drove up from Columbia with my 17 YO son, his first major concert...he was mightily impressed.
He kept saying his favorite was YYZ...good news!

The show itself...the set, the films, the details.
Just incredible production and execution.
I see why the ticket prices seem so high - it must cost a mint to get all that
together.
Was it me or could I actually FEEL the heat from the Witch Hunt flames?

Execution-although they have all of the tools at their disposal when they bumped the Time Machine
back to 2112 the gadgetry was dispensed of seamlessly and it was just like looking at the band on stage from 1977.
The sparse white lights spotlight the band and the stage "choreography" looked the same with Geddy and Alex performing their own moves like they did then.
Hard to pick a favorite but from my username you can probably guess I just loved that segment.

BU2B was great...Watchmaker also incredible.
They are stronger than ever...

Intro and intermission movies were a riot also!
("Moving pitchers"...LOL)
What is the best about "Rash" is they are having fun and it shows.
I hope I can go like that when I'm 58 years old!

Sounds like a great concert!

I was never that great of a fan but I can really appreciate what they do and I do like quite a few songs they did.

Watched that concert that is on TV and it looked like a huge production and lots of fun to be there.

Don't let that smoke out!

Oh...I used to HATE Rush, before "Farewell to Kings".
Then I learned with them...and went backwards to finally "get it".

Greatest part was seeing my classically oriented son enjoy it so much.
He's one of those guys that doesn't get excited about much (not a measure of IQ) but he was "quite enthused" at the whole experience.

We saw the concert here at Helsinki on 4th of May. It was superb to me and my 16 year old son said it was the best concert He has seen (and He has seen quite few of them). My son is a drummer and He likes Neil Peart quite a lot. Has been listening Rush about 6 years now. Maybe I have something to do with that :D

The show has so many cool elements and yes, the flames felt far away. One of my working mates was sitting at the back of the arena and he felt them too ! !

I've always liked Lifesons solo work. The solos are not the usual stuff.

The humor on the show was great thing too.

Permanent Waves got me through my teen years!

I'll have to put on "beyond the lighted stage" DVD tonight and see if it will help me get through these F$^%$*^& Paxil withdrawals....

If you haven't seen that DVD check it out!

Alex Lifeson is tied for 1st place in my list of influences (with Jimi Hendrix).

I owned a Marshall for about 6 months, But I've had multiple Hiwatts, a pair of Dean Markley tube amps back in the 80's, a Boogie rack set-up, and the old Boss Ce-1 chorus ensemble for that thick swirly Alex tone. Don't think I'll go out and buy a Lifeson signature H&K any time soon though, it's too fun to build amps now...

I've always played in trios so I've long appreciated Alex's tone and technique to carry that bandwidth.

No doubt ! I lost track of them around Power Windows, but I still pop Exit Stage Left into my CD player fairly often, what great performers. Did you know that Alex started Rush when he was in Jr. High?

Thanks for the review Cygnus, sounds like a good time was had by all. The Time Machine concept sounds cool, I wish more bands would take the details of their earlier sound more seriously ( I was kind of let down by the Cream reunion sans psychedelic SG and Plexi, but what ya gonna do ).

Sounds like a great show! Huge fan from the moment I heard 2112 as a 12yo in '76. I checked out after Signals. They were a big early influence. One of those bands where you just put the album on and can play every song (within your ability).
Early brewers were primarily women, mostly because it was deemed a woman's job. Mesopotamian men, of some 3,800 years ago, were obviously complete assclowns and had yet to realize the pleasure of brewing beer.

I saw Rush a number of times over the years.
The first was when they were still an opening act, and they opened up for Uriah Heep and Manfred Mann's Earth Band in Pittsburg.
Working Man was just hitting the airwaves in Pittsburg, it was already a local favorite in Cleveland.
It was Rush's first tour and apparently Peart's first gig with the band.
They were impressive.

They also played the local Cleveland/Youngstown/Pittsburg Agora, etc Clubs on a regular basis as they were somewhat of a regional act being originally from Toronto, not that far from NE Ohio/Western PA.

One of my favorite songs is Battle Scar where they jam with Max Webster.

Great pix teefus!
That base is very cool also.
Details are just jaw-dropping...I could easily go to multiple shows based on what we experienced.
