Digidesign Digi 001 rack, anybdy have any expierience?

Post by boldaslove6789 »

Hey ya'll,

Has anyone had any luck with a Digidesign Digi 001 and a decent Mic for recording guitar amps?

I got a guy that has one locally and is willing to sell it to me for $60 with the PCI card and all the other accessories.

I have a huge library of A++ studio grade Vst Effects like "Waves" now, along with Protools 8 (That I torrented) I'll probably have to buy an I-lok to use it although.

I have an elite 64bit PC with Win 7 Core 2 Quad Q6700 @ 2.66GHz W/ 8 gig's of ram 4 Tb hard drive that is going to get updated and turned into a DAW exclusively. The 001 is outdated quite a bit but is compatible with my PC since recently Digidesign updated their drivers for 64x OS so I'm not really worried about that either.

I've longed to record decent studio quality guitar tones and I figured this might be worth the $60? I see them on flea-bay ranging from $70 - $170 so I'm not worried about spending the cash, just don't want to wast my time is all.

i could be wrong but the digi 01 doesn't support LE (protools8) so all your waves and ilok are a no go. I work with HD3 and a portable Digi03 rack that both share the ilok.

as for a good mic.

sm57 will do. $100
sennheiser 409 is better $300-500
royer 121 ribbon (no 48v) is best $1,000 but worth every penny.

The best guitar mics are ribbon microphones do the ribbon's ability to respond quickly, where a diaphram of a condenser or dynamic microphone has added mass that slows it down.

if you want great guitar sounds.
buy a digi 02 w/ ilok
get a nice mic pre (neve 1272,1290/ API 312) you can build one for about $300 plus power supply
and a nice microphone

get a couple foam yoga blocks to place the amp on to decouple it from the floor.

If you really want a great guitar sound get two channels of mic and pre place one mic in front of the amp and one behind. the one behind move until you hear the sound almost dissapear and flip it's phase 180 degrees putting the mics back in phase. your guitar will sound huge!

hope it helps.

as long as the digi 01 comes with software, yes you can use it. I'm only guessing but it's probably protools 6.--- the last version of the TDM G4 mix 24 system.

you can buy a full blown TDM MIX24 core card , farm card, mix card with Mac G4 (quicksilver) and 888 converter for around $800. that will give you a very nice professional 90's protool rig. the original sticker price was about $60K all the plug in's are unlocked and can be downloaded free if you look around.

the biggest benefit from TDM MIX to the newer soon to be obsolete HD rig is the higher sample rates and better correction in the processing delay.

I've mixed over a 100 professional releases on each system the secret is the player and the preamp. The HD/G5 setup offer better pitch correction like melodyne.

I'd check that the pci card will work in your 64 bit machine first.

The digi 01 is a pretty early piece of consumer digi gear and has sorta lousy, but adequate, mic pre's and converters. For 60 bucks, it's hard to go wrong, but then again you get what you pay for.
