My new workbench

Post by Bruciep07 »

Figured I'd show my new cradle and bench. Originally I was set up out in my garage with 10' of work space, lack of climate control out there has forced me inside. I decided to build something small in my basement and this is what I came up with. The T-track came from mcmaster carr, the alum uprights I had my father in-law make up for me at work, they mount to the t-track with quick knobs for easy adjustment. The panavise idea I stole from drhulsey (thank you sir!) There is a through hole through the upright that the panavise clamp slides in to, once positioned its held in place with a small allen set screw... I still have a ton of stuff to bring in, have to figure out what tools will fit where, etc... It's a work in progress. I don't have a ton of space down here, but it should work out fairly well. What you don't see in the pic is the slat wall under the bench for extra storage, plus a shelf a few inches off of the ground... Figured I'd pass along the panavise/T-track idea (even though its mot really mine) maybe someone else could use it too...

Verrry nice, but it does need the "Mad Scientist" touch, tools & components all over, to make it look lived in!

That is one very nice work station, sir. I agree on the lights- with that station you need some high-intensity floodlights and one of those lighted, arm-mounted magnifying glasses with which you can mystify customers by doing that quick "Manhunter"/"Silence of the Lambs" scan across the amp and then declare "Aha- needs biasing..."

Seriously, very nice work! Bill.

Yeah the brackets and t tracks are a stroke of genius.

I agree about the lighting. Fluorescents are nice for low shadow lighting but terrible noise generators around amps.

Some small adjustable lamps to focus the light would be good.

If it were me, I would have the chassis pushed over to the left side and have my iron and tools laying on the right side.

I'm sure you will get what you need as you go along.

Heck, I still use our dining room table when I have a big project.........

+1 for the cradle.

You might gain some valuable space on your bench by flipping both cradle mounts such that the knobs are on the inside of the uprights and under the amp - that'd leave you more room on either side for tools, etc.

How sweeeet is that! Love it. Very well done!!

+1 on the semi-permanently mounted, articulated lighted magnifying glass. My recently turned 50 yr eyes just wouldn't do the job without one. Not sure of the age of your peepers...but...even if youthful, that tool is invaluable for seeing things like those tiny stray strands of wire in places that they shouldn't be.

Cheers,

My area changes so frequent here is a shot a month back I added new clamp on lamps. The variac and oscilliscope are on the floor no room.

With luck tomorrow night I will have cleaned and re-arranged this mess even more.

Working on it, I have a bunch of slatwall hooks that I'm trying to position the "right way" so all my hand tools fit without being too cluttered...

Thanks Bill! I'm working on lighting, I have some halogen desk lamps that are on goose necks that may work out well and be out of the way if I can find a place to mount them. The overhead fluorescent is handy to have until noise is an issue...

Great minds think alike! The cradle is set all the way off to the right with my iron next to it on the left, and the uprights are reversed from the way I originally had them in the picture, funny...

Thanks for all the comments guys, I appreciate it! Necessity is the mother of invention, now if I could just find another 4' of work space, I'd be in business :D

Show some pixs after a month or so. For added work space maybe add a fold up/down table top attached to wall at left of work station. Hey M Fowler clean that mess up ,throw everything in a box and ship to me.
