Beautiful R8, worth seeing twice.

Who did the aging? It's very tasteful as opposed to guitars that look like they have been attacked by a belt sander.

It was done at the Gibson custom shop. It’s a 2018 from a small run done exclusive for a big dealer...I think the order was cancelled and the grey market got their hands on them. It has the exact same aging template as the Knopfler signature Lester’s.

Tom Murphy is the head relic honcho at the Gibson Custom shop. His work sets the bar. Don't know if he did the work on that guitar, but it looks like it.

I don’t think he did - but it’s 100% his style

I had to look the term the grey market up, as it's not a term I typically hear.
I curious how the guitars made it to the grey market?

You mention the aging was done with a template, do you mind me asking how this is done?
Yours Sincerely

Larger dealers arranging side deals with smaller resellers to increase buying power.

Most of the signature les Paul’s are a copy of an artists original burst so Gibson does the exact same aging on the run. You get more authentic aging. If you look at the old Jimmy Page No 1 run you can see this, same with the Knopfler and probably the others, Bloomfield, Ace Frehley etc. it’s not a template applied to the guitar - more like a design spec for the aging.

It’s interesting they would use the artist signature design on a non artist model but it’s super cool

That figuring almost looks like the top on my fake '59, now I wanna relic it! All those hollow bodies are nice too. I only have 1 Gibson hollow body, it's a '68, oh yeah and it only has 4 strings, it's the red-head in the back of the class...

They look like Alembic basses to me, mostly at any rate.

Hey Xtian, #3 is a custom and the rest of the hippy sandwiches are Alembics with a handful of Gibsons for good measure. These all belonged to T.K. Shaw who lived in Chico, but sadly passed away a few years ago (R.I.P. TK!). An old deadhead bass player and Alembic collector. Most of his Alembics went to another collector back east but I ended up with the EB2-D and the #6 Alembic and a bunch of his other "junk".

The macassar ebony on the wing tops was cracked between the pot holes and he changed horses during the repair and just turned the whole build into a new 5 string. I'm using the neck through section and parts and rebuilding the wings for my daughter out of local walnut from my buddies orchard (same walnut I used for my D-style twin cabinet). Getting some direction from my best friend growing up, Mike Gutsch, who was the head builder at Alembic for a couple decades before he moved on to running Tom Ribbecke's guitar production shop.

This is a big thick slab that I'm book-matching out into L&R backs and fronts for the bass and another 6 string neck-through I'm re-winging that will be made to kinda match.

Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

I know Mark knopfler's gibsons really well, the originals and the Tom Murphy ones. We used to take the Murphy guitars on fly gigs, grab and go , private jet stuff in a gig bag, that's why he had them made.

They're almost indistinguishable from the real thing, seriously. This is way before the term 'road worn or relicing' had even been invented. It was at the peak of the 'bursts' price I'd say and I only knew it was 2 different guitars when I asked about caring around a $250,000 guitar and he said it's a copy he had made for that reason :D He said Tom did the checking with a blade by hand copying the originals checking.

Stunning work.

Wow, that is a lot of work cutting the finish with a one sided razor blade. I thought they did this sort of thing with freeze spray.

That is a big rap that they are indistinguishable from the real thing. In the past I could usually pick a reliced guitar from the real thing, but I'm seeing and playing fewer vintage instruments these days so I'm not so sure.

So what's private jet travel like?
It's not something I'll experience, I wouldn't have thought MK used a private jet.
Yours Sincerely
