Also, anyone whose email gets compromised gets either suspended, or all posts moderated.
I'm not a fan of the "guilty until proven innocent" approach. Last year, I joined a forum (can't remember the name as I haven't been back, but I believe it had to do with hifi diy). When I realized I would be kept on a short leash until I "prove my innocence and worth", I decided to never go back to the group. I have helped a few people with their builds here at TAG since I joined up last year, I am respectful and I get along. If TAG had a guilty until proven innocent mandate, I wouldn't be here either.

Probably best like it has been. At least it isn't usenet '96.

Lou,

Yes, I agree with not treating people as guilty before innocent. Let me clarify what I was trying to get across.

In my car club email forum we had a few invasions of bots, as well as people just posting either viruses, trojan horses, complete jibberish or blatant sales pitches for unrelated things or activities. Fortunately, nothing like what TAG has been suffering with lately.

To get a handle on that I changed settings so I have to approve all new members. That appears to be a very common approach with many groups. When I set up the Yahoo Group, we also had a few attacks by people or bots completely unrelated to our car club. It's a huge pain, because once they post a message, it gets delivered to everyone on the list unless they have set their account to receive nothing. After getting complaints about that activity, I implemented the policy where I ask any new person joining to tell me a little about who they are and their interest in our club. That has helped me weed out 3 obvious BS bots or people who clearly have no interest in the club's members or activities.

I've only put two members on moderated - one after his email was hacked and was sending viruses to everyone, and another to a guy who had an email address in Ukraine, who would have no way of participating in a local car club where all we do is get together and drive, something stated in the group description.

Other than that, no leashes other than once or twice reminding people to keep it civil, which is almost never a problem, because most of us know each other and see each other several times a year.

I hope that explains my take on this better than my first post, and I am only adding my input in case the administrator and mods are trying to better handle the kind of stuff we've been faced with lately.

At least it's not the Prodigy message boards of 93', that was wild and wide open.

I always thought usenet 1996 was the dark ages. Funny thing is half my friends on FB are people I met in my first months online.

There was a time.. haha.. long ago, in a place far, far, far from here. The flame wars were amazing. A pyre set sail every minute.

Salute.

Yeah - he who shall not be named (Burgess) is a special needs person.
I've deleted what I think he needs.
But it does involve going outside.
You know it makes sense.

Greg,

I didn't mean to sound like I was admonishing you. I was just stating my preference.

Kind regards,
