Back in the 80's one of the EE engineering profs used to charge up a cap about the size of a beer can with 400 some volts.  He used to short a screw driver across the terminals to signify "times up" on a test or quiz.  In a quiet room the damn thing sounded like a starter pistol going off, after a few quizzes you really become gun shy, expecting him to short that damn thing out again.
Structo, we had a similar experience in shop except that the instructor would have someone hold the spark plug wire when they gave the starter cord a rip...
