I thought the metallic custom colors were always acrylic.

Miles, I don't have the jack at the moment to deal with the modern much less be able to find it after our move. I would love to have it done sometime this summer perhaps.

can't wait to see the v when done.

They probably are acrylic lacquer. pretty much all auto paint is some kinda urethane now.The duplicolor i linked to claims recoat anytime so that leads me to believe that it really is lacquer based.
Come to think of it I used duplicolor metallic blue foofoo cans to refinish a warlock . had no problems with a lacquer topcoat. I'll post some pics hen I get a chance.

Yeah, this is my gear room now. That's what I get for letting employees move my stuff.

LMAO that looks like home to me. I hate myself.

Duco is acrylic lacquer basecoats, yes.

Randyman, if you see a busted 68/69 original parts SG standard I need the deluxe tuners and pickups. I'll buy a trashed guitar with newish looking hardware to get the parts. I also need the tall spacers for short Maestro. (3) Also need the black reflectors. Lucky the pots and switch were all here for this one.

This is an excellent website about Fender and Gibson guitar history and facts.

Colors, finishes, dates, etc.

OMG, you can barely see this headstock in the last picture.

Miles too bad some a-hole already robbed it of the parts you need. I really would like to glue this up someday.

Foofoo can blue so what's wrong with acrylic lacquer except it won't crack and is much tougher than nitro. I can see searching out nitro for restores

If it's natural now and you like it, leave it.

The only reason we finish vintage guitars in the finishes that came on them is because it's what came on them. There isn't any magic in the finish, it's just what's expected. It ages. It's not a foot thick.

Best sounding finish is usually nothing, french polish next, then automotive lacquers, then shoot me the finish wieghs more than the guitar then omg the finish is structural..
