I knew it! Tested the volume pots tonight, both are 300K Linear Pots. O dear Gibson, terrible quality control there. 300K Linear Pots I think were used on the 2013 Traditional and with the 2014 they switched to 500K Log Pots. Now if my guitar was made in January I would understand as they have just made the switchover, however my guitar was made in July. Just terrible, some poor sod may have had to live with this guitar sounding the way it is because someone installed the wrong pots. Luckily I'm a tinkerer and like to tweak guitars until they are perfect for me. I did think it was very odd that this guitar didn't clean up anywhere near as well as my Epi LP that had hotter pickups in it!

Anyway I think I'll still keep the guitar because if I send it back I probably won't be able to get another 2014 Trad and I do like how this guitar plays. Yes it has some fret buzz but you always know when you've found the right guitar as everything just feels right when playing. Although in this case as soon as I plugged it into my Trainwreck I knew something was up when it sounded very bassy! I also couldn't work out how people were saying these pickups sound brighter than 57 Classics, I thought christ if I think these are bassy what are those 57 Classics like :|.

So I'll get some 500K Alpha Log Pots on order, I might keep the tone pots as they are 500K Log and have an extremely slow taper. With the volume on 5 I measure 22K! Thats even slower than the Historics :S. I think they just come on very late as on 2 I only measure 4ohms. Can't wait to actually hear how this guitar is supposed to sound. Can probably raise the pickup back up as well to give me higher output again.

I think my 2012 Trad has 300K vol pots as well.

If the aren't 500k+ they are a ruinous load of crap.

I fucking hate Henry now. I used to like that worthless fuck. He must be high on scripts. He acts like it.

What's not to love about Henry? He is an innovative genius who gave us the Robot Guitar. And he has a new version coming out. In addition to breaking strings with wild abandon the new Robot guitar also fires people randomly and gives interviews to Fox News.

Who is Henry? Screaming Jay Hawkins had a skull named Henry.

I have to say I'm quite disappointed with Gibson really. The construction of the guitar is great I love the finish and the wood don't get me wrong, but the little things like the soldering, pots etc was quite bad. There is a little Tag in the middle of the control cavity for the ground and a ground lead was soldered against the tag instead of threading the wire through the tag and then soldering it. Ridiculous. So the wood is great, wiring done by a child.

Unbelieveable. The Alpha pots have a 9mm shaft instead of a 9.5mm (3/8") shaft so the metal pointers dont fit properly for the knobs. Plus they only come with 2 nuts so I can't fit them onto the metal plate as you need 3 nuts for that. Starting to wonder if I should just send the guitar back :/

If you are anything less than satisfied, send it back. Don't even question it.

Stew Mac has some CTS pots, and then these Bourns, I haven't tried so can't comment on fit or accuracy. Hopefully others can direct you on trouble free pots.

Well before I buy anymore pots I'm going to solder in a 510K resistor instead of the pot to test it. If I still dont like the tone of the pickups then its going back. I still think on one hand yeah I may have swapped out the pots anyway even if they were the correct values but at the end of the day its an £1800 guitar that isn't great out of the box. Then again if I send it back unless I find a decent one second hand in the UK I probably won't find another Gibson that I want. The Historics are still a bit too much for me 2nd hand and after seeing the ridiculous prices Gibson charge for a 'Historic' Truss Rod cover I just think the Historics are way over priced to begin with.

I can see sending it back if you don't like it straight out of the box. But once you start opening it up and working on it and swapping out parts and so forth, as far as I'm concerned, you've bought it, you own it, and you don't get to just decide you don't want it after all and gimme all my money back. You've changed if from a brand new, straight from the factory, guitar to a modified, used guitar, and it's not fair to stick the shop with it, in my opinion.

good lord, I got one of the new robot SG's in for a setup a couple weeks ago. What a pain in the ass. I had to look up the manual on line and push a sequence of buttons just to take a string off. And forget about trying to set the intonation. I use a Peterson tuner but you can't manually tune the guitar and auto tune is not very accurate. Took me twice as long but got her done, will be charging extra for those in the future.

way to go gibson
