I belive black walnut is a top notch tonewood.
Not sure about Black walnut but here in CA we have a lot of Claro Walnut which is very good for bass bodies and electric necks.

From what I understand Black walnut is a bit harder and stiffer than Claro but it planes wonderfuly>I love using hand planes on BW.
I have a good sized(3' dia) black walnut in the yard.I can see a flamed figure on the trunk where some bark is busted off.It drops walnuts and sticks allover my driveway. and truckIts tempting me.
