Not a good idea to use turrets as lead bending tools - it weakens both the mechanical hold of the turret in the board, and can cause lead breakage years later on resistors, especially carbon comps.

Much better to mount the resistor right against the board, and use strain relief bends in one or both component leads before wrapping around turret. I sometimes use chopsticks and my fingers as el cheapo lead benders, or needle-nose pliers with a smooth face.

The important point is to NOT pull on the component lead while bending it, in fact it helps to make a few smaller bends to let the component leads "settle", rather than making one big bending action.

The pic below shows several acceptable strain relief methods. You can choose which to use by overall board layout and aesthetics.
