It means when the kids are all grown up and gone. Won't need a house this size.

My youngest is 13. So I've got five years to plan what we're going to do. Sometimes I think I'll just buy an old airstream, renovate it, and then call home where ever it happens to be parked.

Hey lefty-
I would have to say Mendocino County is where you start to get the Mediterranean thing going. I lived in Eureka and it was very pacific-north-westish. Basically from the golden gate to where highway 1 joins up with 101 (or where the cascades become the sierras) will keep your vitamin D levels up. I'm assuming you want to stay near the coast, things dry up quick as you go inland but make for hot summers.

Anywhere they grow grapes and the housing prices are through the roof is a nice place to live.

Anything south of the golden gate just consider northern mexico, still pretty nice down the coast as far down as Santa Maria, but gets more "californian" as you go south.

My wife and I have talked about the same thing. We've been empty nesters for about two months at this point. Problem is, I don't who I could trust with all my guitars, amps, and recording gear. Even in a big motor home / 5th wheel, I'd have to leave so much of it behind.

You must have teenagers too. I think we spend about that much on food.

I've been paring things down, since my playing is mostly for my own pleasure at this point. I've got an Ikea Jerker Desk that I'm setting up to be my all-in-one workspace. Figure I can find a place for it.

Next step is to sell my Jeep. It's hauling capacity is only 3500 lbs, which limits you to the Bambi.

Yup, our boy is 19. He got married two months ago, scooped up his new bride and moved to Redding - got the hell out of this toilet. Good for him. We're next. My wife own and operates a small eatery in town. She's got buyers in-place for her shop and I think the transaction is scheduled to take place early next year. As for my electronics consulting business, I can do it anywhere I have access to a high speed internet connection.

ER, your in a good place as far as wine is concerned! :-) The wife and I try to get down to the Sonoma / Napa area every couple of years. We usually get a camp site at Boothe State Park at the north end of Napa for a couple weeks, and spend our days touring the wineries. We have a great time for sure.

Same here with software development. But I've actually been positioning myself over the last five years to move more towards a consulting role. There are a lot of three to six month contracts out there that pay a premium.

Might be fun to move about the country taking short term jobs. With an airstream and no teenagers to feed, I might be able to live pretty cheap, so I could afford to take three months off every year.

Jazz-
I quit drinking when I was 25, but yeah I'm smack in the middle of it. I live on the road going up to Sugarloaf Ridge State park and there's a signpost pointing directions and distances to all the Sonoma Valley wineries where our road comes out. Sugarloaf ridge runs right between the Sonoma and Napa Valleys.
