Excellent choice! That solo always reminds me of Mark Knopfler, so I guess everyone hears something slightly different in it.
I remember reading that Joe had recorded this during a week or so of downtime in the middle of a tour and the sleeve notes indicate that the amps at least are actually his (European) live rig.
He's using a Marshall 2555 Silver Jubilee, a Marshall 1959 Superlead (or, likely, the Category 5 Superlead with mid-boost which replaced this), a Van Weelden Twinkleland and a Two Rock something-or-other.
The US rig is the same but with the Carol Ann instead of the Van Weelden, with the usual caveat that he's probably changed this all again now, although it has been the same for a couple of tours now!
The basic setup is that the Jubilee is always on and then he can switch in one of the other three at any time to add the appropriate texture.
I can't remember whether the cabs turned out to be Mojo or Alessandro cabs (I'm tending towards the latter) but they definitely all have EVM12Ls in them, each cab being wired as two stereo columns and running two amps.
I'd love to find this particular tone combination myself!

He uses Two Carol-Anns in his US rig now. An EL34 one in the crunch rhythm position, top left, and a 6L6 model in the Lead position, bottom left. He also got me to convert his original black one to 6L6's and I believe that is going to Europe to run in the Lead postion, bottom left.
His cabs in the US are Mojo, not sure about Europe. All with 12Ls.
Sounds like a Warren Haynes tune, except for the solos and lack of gravel to his voice. Joe certainly can play with the best of them. Definitely can hear the signature Marshall and Dumble tones in this tune. Good schtuff!!!

Great to hear that he's running two of yours now.
Given your experience with his rig, any thoughts on which combination this solo would have been?
Jube and a 6L6 Dumble-style to get the buttery lead tone?

Joe's playing was flat out amazing.
About half way into the show Joe announced he was bringing out a Special Guest.
The special guest turned out to be Larry Carlton.
It was great seeing Larry and Joe playing together.
The interesting thing was watching the completely different styles.
Larry seemed to work hard for every note, while the music just seemed to flow out of Joe at blazing speed.
Joe was using his Silver Jubilee, Catagory 5, and two Carol Ann amps.
Larry was playing through a Two Rock Custom Reverb head running into a Catagory 5 cabinet.
I have seen a ton of great players in my life but Joe's playing was some of the best I have ever seen.
I wish these guys would come out west now and again. I've been watching the Allman bros site for a North Cal show and they just never happen. Makin' enough money inside of 500 miles from home I guess. I'll keep an eye on Joes site and see next time he's out here. What a show that must have been!

<lots of snippage> Great comments as usual Paulster. I hear something change at 3:09 for a few seconds with a kind of growley tone come in. It may well be just the response of the humbuckers to the lower notes though because it's brief. Maybe too, he just adds one of the other amps here?

O.k., Dan... I arrived fashionably late (as usual! ) but I read the entire thread including wading through the YouTube clips.
He cops a pretty good Sonny tone and a pretty good EJ tone.
It's still the fingers. That tone would sound like utter shite unless the dude was playin' wif flawless technique. Good amps make a great player sound great. Plug a hack into that setup and it would be like an audio version of the followspot, every little error and glitch would be right out there for everyone to hear.
He uses too many pedals for my taste. He needs more amps, though.

I'll ask him what he used, easier than guessing and debating it, right ?

Sounds good Allen. I'd appreciate it. Tell him from one fan, he kicks ass. Slo-Gin was a slow starter album for me, but as I began to understand what he was doing musically it grew on me. Now it's in the deck all the time.
