Yes, and I think Noel Redding was similarly needed for the right sound. The only cut I know of that sounded alright without him was Voodoo Chile on which Jack Casady played.

Hendrix played quite a lot of the bass parts himself and he wrote many of the parts that Noel did play. I don't count Noel's contribution as much. "Little Miss Strange" and "She's So Fine"...Jimi did his best to inject some soul into those songs, but alas, even he couldn't... Noel was in WAY over his head IMO.
