I wouldn't be to quick to say you should have bought a MAC
A couple weeks back I had my Email hacked, that was a special pain in the ass getting that sorted out.
I bought a new MacBookPro running lion and none of my software works on it. As it came it was totally useless. Apple's solution.. purchase different and new software. At over $40K in software, I took it back and had them install a compatible operating system.
I picked up an iPad2 10 days ago for running the Yamaha Digital console Apps. It snowed yesterday in the hills so we drove up to play. I took the iPad to keep the kid from being a distraction while driving. We stopped for dinner to warm up. When we came back to the truck the screen had shattered into a spiderweb. I call AppleCare. The screen is not covered by the warranty, but for $300 I can purchase a repair... Seriously? The conversation quickly switched to lets get a genius scheduled to look at it. After I pointed out it was less then 2 weeks old and if they didn't stand by the product I hardly saw the value in investing more money on a faulty product, or future money in the company. We will see how tomorrow goes.
in most cases, with a PC you can reboot in safe mode get on line and search for recent virus then scan the computer and remove the issue. reboot follow the prompts and then run a full system virus scan, defrag and reboot. It'll take a day or two but it'll fix most problems.

Yeah, I was being sarcastic about buying a Mac.
I think most here are pretty savvy with PC's myself included.
It was just that every time I tried something it got worse.
Go into Recovery Console, copy NTLDR to C:, copy NETDETECT.COM to C:, etc. but it just kept compounding.
BOOTCFG and all the other DOS commands.
Frankly, I think it is the hibernation feature that is corrupting the data.
I started using that a lot last year because it boots up so much faster.
So I am going to quit using that and just shut down normally and see how it goes.
This machine is getting a bit long in the tooth, I never even updated to PCI Express.
It does use a SATA Raptor which may be at it's end of life considering they spin at 10,000 RPM.
Thanks for the offer Juan, I'm fairly savvy but probably don't know every trick in the book.
I did make a rescue CD disc a while back but guess what? I couldn't find it!
So for now it's humming along.
Thanks everybody for chiming in.

Don't let that smoke out!

Acronis makes a good product that allows you to make an image of your drive.
When your pc configuration takes a dump, you just restore the last image you took and you are instantly back in business.
It only takes a few minutes.

Just my luck I get hacked by god and real estate, had it been a porn link.. More of my contacts would have clicked on the link.
My account got suspended and I had to log into my backup account to reopen the primary except I forgot the password and after 3 attempts it locked up and sent the password to my primary which was already locked up. a few ranting emails, a phone call and 48 hours later I got back in, to an inbox with a couple thousand delivery failures, for being a BOT it was really a dumb one. It sent two emails to everyone in my contacts, then any returned mail it just kept spamming, until the server freaked out and locked the account down.

one word = Parallels!Aurora wrote:EDIT: Mac's are good at what they do, but from an engineering POV, there's still quite a lot that cannot be done on a Mac......
I can run any and all my old Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 7 etc applications on my Mac thanks to Parallels. Essential software for ex-Windows users now on Mac.
