Martin Barre tone on Benefit
Any insight on what he used to get his tone on Tull's BENEFIT album? Thanks

Re: Martin Barre tone on Benefit
When I saw them in 1970 in Milwaukee where I was in college, he was playing the LP Jr through 2 HiWatt half stacks. No mikes on the amps and he sounded great. The only guitar sound I heard that first year of college was Leslie West with his Flying V with a P-90 and "Stramp" amps. Louder than anything I'd ever heard and tone forever.

Great read on his gear. I was surprised at the humble gear of what has to be one of the great bands of all time.
Thinking back now I can hear that percussive HiWatt amp on those albums.
Never forget buying my copy of Aqualung on vinyl and playing it to death!
Had no idea that was an LP Jr. on that record.

Awesome tones from that axe by Barre, like the chirp he got from a strong attack on Cross Eyed Mary, the bloom into overtones on sustained notes on Aqualung, smooth rhythm tones by just backing off the volume...Structo wrote:Great read on his gear. I went out immediatly after seeing the Aqualung tour and tried a HiWatt in the store. I found I simply had to play too loud to get any tone at all, sooo dissapointed.
