Woah, I didn't hear about this, only that he was not doing so well this week. Well, thanks for the relay of information. He was a driven man really, a kind of pioneer and a holdout all in one, I think. Certainly a businessman conscious of his American roots, too, although the market changed radically over the years. A survivor, yes, and the world of guitar playing was a better place for his time and attention. Rest In Peace, Ted Weber.
Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?

Dammit!
The man was an inspiration to a gear freak like me.

Re: R.I.P Ted Weber
Sad indeed. Ted always found time to answer my stupid questions or give advice. His business allowed a hack like me to build and experiment.
RIP Ted.

I knew he was ill bad didn't realize he was that bad.

Re: R.I.P Ted Weber
The worst-possible news. Ted was inspirational and an enormously helpful to many amp builders worldwide. No-one else in current production made such good speakers.
This is like the passing of some golden age.

Re: R.I.P Ted Weber
RIP Ted you will be sorely missed. I would never have attempted to build an amp if he hadn't sold such a wide variety economical kits and been willing to answer so many of my newb questions. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all those that will be touched by his passing.
Re: R.I.P Ted Weber
The spooky thing is that I had just been telling my wife last night that I was wondering if I could gradually take the biz over from Ted so that we don't lose that fantastic resource. (I live in Indy)
Spooky, part 2 - last Sunday wife said, y'know, you really need to get some biz cards printed and try to make a go of this amp repair sideline you've been fiddling with. Monday morning, got laid off.
Anyway, what would be a decent/appropriate way to approach the Webers about this delicate topic at this painful time?

TA and the crew are continuing the Weber VST company according to a post on the TGP forum. There are no plans to sell the business at this time.

Re: R.I.P Ted Weber
I'm very sad about it. I've worked closely with Ted for the last six years, but have been doing business with Weber VST & Ted since 1999. Ted, TA & I met up at Winter NAMM 2006 to cruise the show for a bit, have lunch and a few beers, so I knew them both professionally and we were friends as well.chimeboss wrote:And how do you feel about his passing?
I'm sure we've exchanged hundreds, if not thousands of emails over the years and quite a few phone calls. I was fully aware of Ted's situation six years ago, and he was quite candid about his life expectancy without the lung transplant. We'd just exchanged emails last week, in fact, and he'd just gotten out of the ICU after three weeks. At that point he said he was on oxygen 24/7, and was living day to day.
He was a very generous guy with his knowledge, and he did his best for clients, and certainly went well beyond the norm for me. He had a great sense of humor, and always did the right thing. You just don't find many people of the same caliber as Ted Weber.

Re: R.I.P Ted Weber
Ted's passing is very sad news. I purchased my first set of Weber speakers in 1998. I wrote several of the early reviews.
For those who did not know Ted when he was a one-man show, I believe that one of the reasons why he started the business was to give his son incentive to come home. If I recall correctly, I believe that TA was working in California at that point in time. Ted was still working at Delphi Delco during the day and building speakers at night. TA took over business operations, and the rest is now history.

Re: R.I.P Ted Weber
Very sad news.
Although I never had the need for his contact, by all accounts I have seen he was as responsive as possible to his customers.
Only neg I have ever seen was his kit components were cheap, but he was up front about that, stating he wanted to make kit building affordable. I have gotten those, and they weren't as bad as depicted for sure, and nowhere near as bad as what is found on many production amps that command much higher prices.
I am curious about the biz...maybe it is just a rumor,
that TA is nowhere near as responsive or knowledgeable as Dad. I will order again, as I have frequently in the past.
Never a back order, oddball quantities have been filled accurately, and never a return. That has been my experience, unlike a few others that I won't name right now.

Re: R.I.P Ted Weber
Very sad day to loose Ted and hope the family can find some peace in his passing. I see that Ted was also an Air Force Veteran so we lay to rest another comrade.
Very strange to me is that when I heard about this, I was visiting with an old Marine Corps friend from Kokomo that I hadn't seen for 32 years at this weekends PGA Golf Tourney in Chaska, MN and now I find out Ted is also from Kokomo as well.
