In the 60's people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird , and they take Prozac to make it normal.

Or the fiddle:

I played mostly Bluegrass music while I was in medical school. To add to my guitar playing, I learned to play the banjo and the mandolin. If it's fretted, I can play it (eventually). Then, I bought a fiddle. O-o-u-u-ch  I made noises that neither man nor beast SHOULD make :? I've still got the fiddle, but it still looks new (much to my wife's joy) :!:

I started age 7 on fiddle but then moved to a school district where it wasn't offered at age 10. Switched to alto sax. I'll bet I could still hunt my way through a chart on either alto, clarinet, or flute after 40 years if I could manage the ombiture. I can play by ear on fiddle if there's a good strong guitar blasting away. I've never learned the fretboard that way. You can tell if you heard me play. Pure lazy.

Clarinet was my first instrument and where I learned to read music. I played some Tenor sax in our rock band as a teenager so we could do Papa's Got a Brand New Bag. Keys are like frets. Playing the fiddle is more like playing a slide whistle. Only real musicians can do it 8)

I marvel at their skill constantly. Look at that diminutive neck/fretboard too.
There's room for alot more error than accuracy on that stubby sucker.

Have you ever seen the "meat hooks" on Paganini? They look to be about the size of a roasting hen if not larger! (His nose had to have obscured his view of the neck too...) But his facility with the fiddle is jaw dropping.

Dr. H, I too can only produce sounds that make a suitable ipecac on those bowed instruments. Positively pathetic without fail...

Had some luck with double bass in high school - also got woodwinds & a touch of brass in my past.

Fiddle, or violin, or whatever you want to call it, fits for me somewhere between oboe and bagpipes
