Introducing Captain Billy Lang

Post by Ears »

This guy is virtually totally unknown in home country, New Zealand.

He's a fusion player who's been in the session business for some thirty five years.
I've seen a video of him covering Corea/Rodrigo's "Spain" televised live to a audience of probably some 20 million in European Sports awards 1995 or 1994.
I've caught him live a couple of times, the last time I saw him he was playing with Jeff Berlin.
Nothing special some might say, but get this, he's a full-time international Airline Pilot. Guitar session work is just something he does as a hobby in his spare time, you know, a session this week in LA, in three weeks time a gig in Tokyo or Munich or London etc.

He is known as Captain Billy Lang, on account of his day job.

If I could play like him I wouldn't bother with the pilot stuff.

Here a clip of him playing a rumba on nylon, a little outside the Carlton style stuff I've seen him playing before.

The backdrop is Rangitoto Island just off the harbour of Auckland city NZ.
I lived just down the road, with the same view, in the nineties.

This is a VERY talented guy. I notice he uses a pick and fingers on the nylons. I'd love to hear him on an electric guitar :D
This forum has introduced me to great players around the world, eg, Knut Reiersrud from Norway.
So-o-o much talent in the world :D
Thanks for sharing :!:

Chances are that you already have, somewhere in the mix of hundreds of sessions. For some reason I have a strong recollection (from his bio or something) that he even played on the soundtrack for the TV series "Dallas".

That sounds nice.
Kind of a Yanni vibe.
And I like Yanni. :D
