Japanese ebayers ruining US EBAY used gear market...

Post by AtomCap »

Noticed a new trend - these Japanese guitar dealers on eBay are flat out overpricing stuff on the bay and now the US sellers are following suit - but the kicker is nobodies buying or at least it seems as so. The low offers have never been lower.. Its utterly infuriating!! Especially with searches like Les Paul, SG , Strat etc - the search results are FLOODED with overpriced guitars from Japan.
For every handful of US guitars or gear for sale there are 20 in Japan 40-80% overpriced. Yes I know about the "US only" option - that's not the point..

Rant over, I guess Boss CE1 chorus pedals are really worth $700-12000 and Late 90s LP's for $4500...

What if I told you the whole market has been a lie for twenty years?

None of that shit sold for those prices. I know because I have that shit and refused to participate.

Refinished goodtops for $55,000.00? Good luck. Vintage is as dead as a hammer. It's not coming back. It never arrived the first time.

Next time you are shopping on eBait, click the filter box for sold items only and they you will learn what the market really is. You might be surprised at what you learn.

Personally, I can't understand buying an expensive guitar unseen, unplayed. If I was that well-heeled, there are places with great stock, where you can be treated well and you can handle the merchandise.

That's right, punch on the "completed auctions" line near the bottom of your list 'o choices. I got that advice what, 19 years ago, and repeated it to friends & customers hundreds of times. "Completed" includes auctions that attracted no bidders. Yes, zero. Just because somebody's asking a zillion bucks for something doesn't mean that's the market price, especially when there are no buyers. I wonder if the same problem afflicts Reverb, I'm sure it does to some degree.

I htik global currency exchange rates have a lot to play in this too. The Yen is really strong so a 5000 yen guitar a few years ago would be worth $15,000 that same 5000 yes will buy $30,000 guitar, it's the same value to a Japanese person in what it cost's him it's just the person in the USA get double the money.

I've worked a lot in Japan over the last 10-15 years and for me prices for everything are more than double solely due to exchange rates, my friends who live there don't experience any difference of course.

Point taken.. but because a $5000 guitar is japanese owned does not make it a $10,000 guitar. It only means they can turn their money into $ and buy at virtual .5 price, not x2 a value..

Look at Reverb for early BC Rich. You see that guy? He's insane.
