Nice. There was a radio station ... KSFM "Earthrock" ... back then too. Did you ever play at the Oasis Ballroom? Some good local music back then. Last thing I saw at the Oasis was a local group called "Target". They opened for Rick Derringer with Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert. City Kidd (later, maybe early '80s, ended up forming Tesla), Steel Breeze, White Raven (went to school with Chris Duran), Rutabaga Boogie Band, etc. I was practicing with the remnants of a band called "Full Blast" (lead guitarist Glenn Whalen and drummer) when I decided to focus on college.

Oh yeah the Oasis was one of our regular haunts. There was a Tower Records at the corner there (Watt Avenue?), and we always stopped there to see what new LPs were out. George Thorogood was in town once and watched us play at the Oasis. Then we all went to Tower Records and he signed a couple of records for us. After that, he bought us a some beer and we drank it together in my bass player's van. Good times...the black and white photos I posted were taken at the Mather AFB club, where we were banned after one show for tokin' in the boys room
We shamelessly stole the Earthrock moniker from KSFM. Our longest gig was as the house band at a place called The Berry Patch, a biker bar on West El Camino where we played a lot of Rolling Stones music. We played there 5 nights a week for 4 months, at $300 a night to split between the 6 of us...my girlfriend drank away most of my pay
We knew the guys in Rutabaga Boogie Band and played all the same places. Another band called FireFox tried to recruit our lead singer, but he insisted they take me also (probably because he lived with me)
They asked me if I could play the opening riffs to Train Kept A Rolling and I said no but I could learn it. They didn't like that answer
We auditioned to play the Tahoe/Reno/Vegas circuit once at the Oasis, which payed really well, but the manager dude wanted us to learn Fame by Bowie as well as Love Will Keep Us Together by Captain and Tenille. They even lent us emerald green silk suits for the audition. Our drummer and Keyboardist hated the whole idea, and after the audition the manager said "You're pretty good but WAY TOO LOUD
Glad we didn't go that way - I could have ended up dead on a toilet

Great stuff. I remember the Tower Records. I was in a short-lived group ... didn't even have a name that I can remember ... where we played a wedding gig at a winery in Folsom - all original music. I used to buy gear from Sunrise Music, and Jeff Watson worked there before he went off and hit it big with Night Ranger. He provided the sound system for the gig that night and hung out. Took my guitar during one of our breaks while I was chasing some skirt, and I almost quit playing after that. Damn that dude had the chops even then. Got my first Marshall half stack and a B.C. Rich Mockingbird Supreme from Skip's Music. I still have the receipts. There's a closed group on Facebook for the long-gone Oasis Ballroom.Ken Moon wrote: ↑Sat Mar 31, 2018 4:52 pmOh yeah the Oasis was one of our regular haunts. The Golden Spur, student lounge, University of South Carolina. Back when the drinking age was 18 and they had $1.80 pitchers. We did a bunch of sixties stuff. It was very improvisational. Did a medley of Purple Haze and Third Stone from the Sun, where in the freakout ending I threw in the Close Encounters meeting tones, and the original Star Trek theme. Did the entire Who medley from Woodstock. Stones, Beatles, etc. Circa 1977 or 1978.
