Supro Reissues

Post by Firestorm »

Anybody have an opinion on Zinky's new Supros? The originals were Valco, nothing special (except a young Jimmy Page played one). Bruce was kind of a latter day Paul Rivera at Custom Shop, but afterward the Smokey Amps (while cute) don't inspire much confidence. A friend has them in his store. Hasn't sold one. [/quote]

No I haven't even seen one up close, I have thought about buying some off of Reverb when they dip into the $800 range. Love the vinyl covering.

The reborn Supro and Magnatone amps both look very cool, and are very expensive. Hope they're built well.

US made. $1000 - $1300 list.depending. I have a '66 Thunderbolt that somebody modded. It has an unused triode. It's taking every ounce of my willpower to put it back stock. Needs recapping and it was underfiltered to begin with: 20uF plates, 30uF screens (interesting), 10uF PI and driver, 4uF pre. Tweed tone control (low insertion loss). Point to point wired. No bypass on the outputs, but only 200R (hot). I've never heard it without the mod (too gainy).

At first we thought Page played this amp. Then we thought it was a Coronado. Now we think he played the Thunderbolt, then the Coronado.

I'm going to recap this, and (God help me) leave the preamp alone (but I might parallel the triodes ... No wait! Stop! )

Then I'll consign it in my friend's store and maybe get some traffic.

Zinky is known for novelty amps. But he was at Custom Shop and did the Vibroking and some other shit, so he's not to be discounted.
