If you had those guitars plugged into SRV's sequentially numbered Vibroverbs, THAT would be impressive.cbass wrote:Oh so I'm supposed to be impressed or something![]()

Re: I'm telling everybody..
heh
The rest of the story is that in 1957 Gibson made les pauls and these were made together in a batch. Duane's is refinished by a misguided Gibson custom shop directive.. just like what they did to Bill Monroe 45 years ago when they refinished his Loar. He broke off the scroll and used a pocket knife to remove the logo. lol
They have unstickered PAFs and honestly are not the best playing guitars ever made. Both about 8.5lbs. They sound and feel nearly identical. I can tell by the neck carve at the headstock that two different people carved the necks, but the dimensions are very close.
Scarface got it's name when a friend of mine tried to remove the second owner's SG red overspray from the top without any skills. It was enamel and came off easily by simply picking it off with a fingernail. It was near mint under there. An SG red bag to protect the gold. So when I saw it I screamed "Scarface" and since 1990 it's been Scarface. It's a little bitchy with lots of character.

Really cool
is there a difference in the way the tuners work?
Looking at using the kludson style as opposed to the Grover

Re: I'm telling everybody..
My personal experience with Kluson Deluxe tuners on a Gibson is that they aren't very good. I had a set on an acoustic that held a tuning fairly well (but not they way they should) except for the B string, which slipped and needed regular attention. They did not crank smoothly so getting to pitch could sometimes take a bit of fiddling. I knew the idiosyncrasies of them, so I could manage, but I can't imagine a pro player keeping them. OTOH those Grovers should be a world of difference. I am thinking the Grovers are not original. Someone else may know for sure. I'm reasonably certain the Gibson continued to use the Kluson tuners through at least the late '60's and probably into the '70's.

Re: I'm telling everybody..
Yes. Grovers suck. They are most of the difference in the sound of these two and the backlash is hard to tolerate. Klusons rock, but you have to keep them serviced and or replaced. Original is always better and Klusons work if you know how to tune up into the note and stop on it instead of the bad tuning practices I see 98% of all people failing at.dcribbs1412 wrote:Really cool![]()

Re: I'm telling everybody..
Historically, let's look at originality only. If a guitar was $50k in 1990 and the identical guitar had been grovered.. up to a 50% hit. You'd be getting $25k offers.
You drill your golden era Gibson for Grovers, welcome to the iron age.
