Audio Interface for iPad Mini / GarageBand

Post by sliberty »

I have an iPad Mini (has headphone jack and lightening connector), and would like to be able to record into GarageBand, mostly with a microphone in front of my amp. Of course I might end up playing with some of the amp sims, other recording programs, etc too, but for now that is not the focus. Simple SM57 in front of my AC4 into the iPad.

[There is a change that I might buy a new iPad Mini if they announce one in 2 weeks, and who knows what ports it would have ???]

I need an interface that will bring this signal into the iPad, sound good, without overloading and clipping, and of course I need to be able monitor at the same time so that I can listen to the drums, etc. while I add tracks.

I would like to spend not much more than $100 if possible, but $50 would be even better.

Which interface would you recommend?

I am not familiar with this unit but, their Scarlet devices are well made units that sound good.

I think only the Scarlett ones go for around $80, and I've read that they won't work with an iPad. Do you know if that is correct?

They have updated the iTrack solo for lightning. That may be why some of the old stock is being reduced. See here: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/iTrackSoloL

The plugin bundle provided free is worth nearly the cost of the interface IMHO.....

There is a device called the irig that I use to play direct into the garageband. I also have a usb CADu37 mic. It makes it real easy. You may have to buy a usb to lightening adapter which they are pretty proud of. I ended up getting pretty frustrated with it. There is a latency issue between what you play and what you here which kept throwing me off. Great composing tool though.
I've got blisters on my fingers!
