I've listened to Shawn for Years. The first thing that cought my ear was his guitar sound. It somehow reminds me of the sound of the dumble (Shawn Lane- Powers of Ten). The man was amazing musician (guitaris, keyboardist..) and I think one should not be blinded by his flash speed playing but the beautiful music he made.
Since english is not my native language, I would like to know what is the amp he talks about + the nady? tube pedal he is using.
If anyone happens to have a schem for the amp/pedal he used I think I would very much to like to try to build them.
Shawns overdrive sound has lots of gain but is never harsh, reminds me of the Dumbles. Kind of high gain dumble sound.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--Yov8kClug is video of him I'm talking about of him demonstrating briefly his equipment (and mentioning his amp and overdrive pedal).
Be sure to search youtube for Shawn Lane (for better demostration of his sound + check his records), If you haven't heard him before.. be aware!! (?can I say that?)

Re: Shawn Lane sound ?
It's kinda got that '80s processed sound , you know, pointy headstocks and racks the size of fridges. http://www.brettgarsed.com/ .Shawn's a fan of Bretts and the 2 sound similar with alot of legato in they're playing. I do like Bretts slide work(non better anywhere) and his rock/blues playing(killer). I think it's a highly processed sound into clean amps rather than using just amp to pull tone, dirt, sustain ect ect blah,blah...
Re: Shawn Lane sound ?
wish i could help. was at the powers of ten cd release party at the new daisy theatre in memphis. never saw his gear.

Re: Shawn Lane sound ?
The Powers of Ten stuff does have that 80's processed sound a bit. The tone reminds me a lot of Frank Gambale's at the time. Not the greatest... However, listen to his tone on Temporal Analogues of Paradise. Awesome tone. One of my favs of all time.
Originally he played strats and then Ibanez Sabres and then Ibanez Ghost Riders, and eventually switched to Vigiers.
He used humbucking Lace pickups. They were Lace Transensors I believe. Supposedly these pickups (which you can pick up on eBay for real cheap) are really bland sounding. I think the point is to really let the sound of the guitar come through. IOW, on a cheap guitar, they will sound horrible. On a nice guitar they might sound pretty good.
His pedal is a Westbury w-20 "The Tube" tube overdrive pedal. *SUUPOSEDLY* the Guyatone TO-2 is the same pedal as the Westbury as is the Nady tube overdrive pedal (sorry, don't know the model number).
His amps were either Holmes Mississippi Mud amps or Mississippi Bluesman amps (don't know which he used when). SUpposedly both the amp & the overdrive pedal sounded like crap alone, but together they sounded great. He also used a rare stereo Gjika amp that is suposedly very rich & smooth (http://www.gjika.com/)
I know that when I saw him he was using a small rack setup w/ a Peavey pre-amp (TubeFX??), but don't remember much else.
There's probably a lot more detail on his stuff here (Shawn Lane dedicated forums):

Re: Shawn Lane sound ?
That shawn lane forum cracks me up.. everyone over there uses the word "floop" instead of fsck. Consistantly. Its the kind of absurdity that makes me happy to be alive
