So, a guy asks me to take a look at his solid state organ amp. I groan and agree. He brings it over and tells me it's it's got low output, has been cutting in and out for a while. I plug it in: low volume. Can't get it loud to save my life. Okay, start cleaning jacks. No luck...pull the chassis, no obvious problems. I notice that the bass pot is damaged (the board mounted case is separating from the body of the pot, letting the guts be too loose). So, I put it together again; still no luck. It's got like 6 taps on it, so I have no replacements on hand, so the patched-up pot will have to do.
Here's where the epiphany happens...I'm sitting down by the cab, when I realize: I only hear the tweeter...nothing from the speaker. Pull the speaker, and what does the meter read? Infinite resistance. All that ripping apart to find a blown speaker. I still think the pot's going to need replacing, but this $150 amp is probably not worth replacing a 150W speaker and a specialty pot in.
Throw this in the bin of "why I don't like working on solid state". It's not usually worth fixing...thanks for letting me vent.
