Illinois cap bought by Cornell Dubilier

Post by John_P_WI »

I just received an email in Caps "ILLINOIS CAPACITOR INC. ACQUIRED BY CORNELL DUBILIER MARKETING, INC."

Hmmm, in other words and my guess is, Illinois caps will now be priced 3 to 4 times higher....

Interesting,

I just got 10 47uF caps and found them to now be smaller than the F&T's. Wonder if this has something to do with it.

How will guys defend themselves now.....when a poster on TGP ask what caps are "best".....and a dozen people tell him how crappy IC are..."Stay away from IC".......what will they think when they hear CD owns the brand.?
I guess something like....."I don't give a rats ass WHO owns them.! They make lousy caps and you will never see one in any of MY amps".!

So now they're smaller, no problem! Note TAG has a gallery of filter cap follies & oddments. Perhaps the "extra space" was taken up by stuffing, like modern Atoms, to look "big and authorotative."

Cant' say I've any complaint about Illinois Cap quality. Not my first choice OTOH I rarely see failures. Mostly old ones that are at the age one should consider replacing them, 20-30 years.

There was a time, I believe it was in the '90s, that there were real issues with IC caps, but I have used them occasionally as I bought quite a few around '02.

In fact one of my best sounding amps, a 2nd gen ODS head, used all IC PS caps. But it also has Amperex 12AX7s and RCA black plate 6L6GC, which might have more to do with it!

I don't buy them now, have been using MIEC quite a lot lately, good 105 deg C caps at good prices.

I used Tech Caps a lot.
USA made and fairly priced.

Hard to find these days non-ebay...
