My oldest child turned 18 yesterday.

Blip.

I swear, the day before I was holding this infant that would laugh at every funny face I made.

Her first word was 'Daddy.'

I'm a little verklempt.

Here's a pic of her with Maceo Parker, who helped her sneak in to the show. Another with the guitar I helped her build.

I know the feeling...mine turned 18 and the other is about to be 16. 18 was a little depressing and so was the HS graduation. Time flies

My 17 year old left for Boot Camp on the 1st! BIG void in the house. Very depressing!

Careful now Matt... I AM old, but I don't "feel" all that old (until I try to get up or sit down, now that is a painful reminder of one's age). My oldest "boy" turns 30 next month.

The Pink Floyd tune "Time" sums it up well in my case, and runs through my head often when I start feeling pinched (flattened?) for time.

"...And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you rise and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death..."

Congrats!

My youngest child turned 18 back in December. Eighteen is an awkward age when kids think they actually know everything, and can't be convinced otherwise.

I guess they all mature differently. My 18 year old thought he knew everything at 16. Now he has thankfully realized he doesn't and he is actually seeking out my opinion. Yes, he actually wants to learn from me AND he respects my opinion. In the last 6 months or so, we have replaced a transmission, brakes, struts, shocks, etc...together. He has also been my 'apprentice' on our house remodel. Doing things like setting tile, sweating copper, installing sinks and toilets, removing/hanging/finishing drywall, painting, doing rough and finish electrical among other things. That is a satisfying turn of events and it makes me feel like he has a chance after all.

Same here. Reminds me of an old Mark Twain quote:

“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”

Damnit you sound exactly like my dad. Except he still gives me shit constantly. Now I give everyone I know shit. Thanks dad.
