I picked enough snap beans for Sunday dinner and also picked 165 various hot peppers yesterday. I need to prep those peppers and start drying them.

This is our first year at our new place, so still trying to get the soil squared away. So far, potatoes are doing great. Everything else is struggling.

Someone mentioned Kentucky Wonders....

When i was 12, we used to only eat three things: Allen brand canned Kentucky Wonders, cornbread, and every now and then grandmother would get bacon. Cornbread and beans was a staple at the local food pantry when i was a kid.

I can't even imagine what those taste like fresh. lol.

I've got 3 different pole beans growing (not bearing yet.) Kentucky Wonder, Blue Lake, and something else I forget what! The KW are from beans that dried up on the vine 2 summers ago and they were still viable! I hope Ferry Morse or Burpee or whomever won't be coming after me for violating the prohibition on propagation!

Oh yeah!! Even better is when she made the cornbread from leftover bacon grease. I think she used bacon grease more than butter.

Cornbread has a special place in my heart. Lol. It was a staple of east Texas cuisine for almost 200 years. Flour tended to spoil from weevils and the heat, but corn meal didn't.

Reminds me of another recipe she used to make all the time - 1 can of corn, one can of ranch style beans and half a pound of ground beef cooked and drained went into a big skillet. On top was poured a big ol helping of sweet cornbread and it was tossed in the oven.

My mom made that same dish all the time. I love beans and cornbread my grandad made a big pot of brown beans and ham every Sunday while granny was at church cooking beans and drinking beer with grandpa is some of my most cherished memories.

Phil, are the KW fairly easy to grow? Do they require a lot of space and sunlight?

Bass, man you take me back....like 10 years lol. It's not a long time but my childhood was a good one ;)

We also used to eat what my old man called "South Dallas Round Steak" which was just thinly sliced baloney fried up and put on sandwiches. That or spam. ugh. spam.....

STOP IT!

You guys are making me very hungry for produce!

We probably have a couple more weeks before anything is ready.

Three different tomatoes, cherry tomatoes will be ready first.

We put those into salads. :D

Oh you gotta try cherry t'maters heated up some! With breakfast eggs, stirred into chili, or on pasta with whatever other odds n ends. They're the bomb!

I used to grow jelly beans, even smaller than cherry tomatoes. A lot of flavor in a tiny package. The plants just didn't want to quit, they grew up my bean poles about 9-10 feet, had to stand on a step ladder to harvest, no fooling!
