wagner safe-t-planer alternative

For all the luthier and cabinet maker out there, here a link to a Wagner Safe-t-planer alternative :

That's a 35$ router bit that's made by CMT 1½" dia. x 5/8" with ½" shank.
Even cheaper than the safe-t-planer (discontinued) but with better result. Just make sure your press drill RPM is very high.

For those who don't know the safe-t-planer, it's a tool that many guitar making book recommend. Even Bennedetto ( famous jazz guitar maker ) use that on his own model.

Router bits usually usually needs moreRPM than a drill press has, but may be OK......
A router sled on a tray is agood alternative....

CMT recommend 10 000 RPM, but it worked fine on my press drill at 3200 RPM. Anyway, I only use this for rough shaping and always finish with sand paper.

Router sled on a tray are great and when i'll want a nice setup I'll already have the router bit !!!

i've read mixed review on wagner's clone ( sandcast vs machined from billet, etc...) that's why I dont went for this option, and a router is on the top of my wishlist.

Besides RPM limitations, I don't think the bearings on most drill presses are rated for that kind of torsional force. Drill presses are not designed like mills and I have seen quite a few drill presses succumb while being treated like a mill. That being said, all may be OK with wood.

I totaly agree with you Vibratoking,
I've learn that those kind of tool only take light cut (max 1/16 depth), dont' push too hard and let the tool work. For me it's the ideal tool for making guitar neck taper,back of the headstock, brace ...etc. That's nontheless a great tool for limited space shop like mine.
