LOL. My neighbor asked me if I was ever a professional musician. I told him it depended on his definition of "professional."

If that means having been paid for playing, then my answer is yes.

If it means making more money than I spent on gear, i.e. a profit, then no, I was never a professional.

Then there were those gigs where at the end of the night we owed the bar money, having a bar tab more than the take at the door.

Do you ever play around with the complexities of porting? Or do you think that I would be ok if I make 2 back panels for the cab; one being 1/4 of the back and the other being 3/4 or the back and choosing whether to use one or both based on how it sounds?

Take a look at this software. I've had a registered copy for years. This is about hi-fi cabs though just as has been stated. It allows you to play with length, width, depth, and frequencey response. Where you want your bass spike etc. You just alter a dimension and it will show you on a plot what happens to the freq. response.
