Simple Class A Stereo

Post by passfan »

For those of you who aren't afraid to explore the realms of "just how good can I make a transistor sound" and like your amps warm ; here is the site that started it all for me. Noted amp designer of Hafler fame, and the originator of the Aleph series of class A room heaters Nelson Pass shares his research of how to stretch as much as possible out of a simple, single gain stage, in multiple parts. I have built a few of these and they sound nice.

Here I was thinking you're a Joe Pass fan. Well, maybe that too. Nelson's a mighty good amp designer. I saw a similar Nelson Pass Zen super simple amp, maybe same design in The Audio Amateur mag many years ago. He's never one to sit still. Now there are 6 variations ?!?

Yes , he has pushed the old Zen design to the limits for sure. Son of zen is a balanced se design that has a matching balanced preamp as well. My first build was the A75 which is 75 watts per channel of Class A power. Thing weighed 80 lbs with heatsinking and ran at 112 deg. F. on the sinks. Cbass , I could never grow tired of you. You're almost like a cup of coffee first thing in the morning.
