Need Theremin! Lives hang in balance!!!

Post by titanicslim »

OK, the thing about lives in danger may be an exaggeration but I just saw the film: Theremin -an Electronic Odyssey and now I gots to have one. :!:

I tell you, I really don't know how I've made it this long without one. I'd like to build a tube-type unit but it needs to have two antennae and be capable of all the expression and tones- and I need to be able to build it without having to solve a lot of mysteries. Seriously, at this stage in my life I'll build a Paia kit before I take on a project where nobody can actually tell me where to get the transformers

Hopefully, somebody has actually built one and will share their knowledge. :?: :?: Maybe there's an uncompleted project for sale or for swap. (Think about it- Will you really ever finish it?

I hope someone cand give me a little info. but seriously try your video store or Amazon- or Netflix if you're on it- and see this film :!: :!: :!: If it doesn't touch your heart then Buddy, you need to send in a Missing Organ Report. What happened to this man, though only touched upon in the film, shouldn't happen to the worst person in the World. There is a profoundly moving interview during his time in the Soviet Union where he is afraid to give almost any direct answer. Later it tells of the aftermath of a previous interview. Everyone should at least see this particular sequence at least five times to gain some small understanding and abhorrence of totalitarian regimes. Great interviews with Bob Moog and performances by Clara Rockmore that'll make you weep.

Thanks, LeeMo

#3 is Clara Rockmore's instrument. It's drawn by Bob Moog and so is the other one, for which I've just found a magazine article. I'll take these to bed and see if they make sense to me.

I built the etherwave kit about ten years ago and used it quite a bit in my former band the Manatees. A couple years ago I did some electrical work for Paul Shure who is interviewed in the movie. Paul played theremin in The Day the Earth Stood Still, which is probably the most famous theremin soundtrack. I ended up buying the moog theremin that Paul played on the first two Planet of the Apes movies and on Mars Attacks and others. I used it on a low budget horror film soundtrack one of my friends was recording. Theremins are a lot of fun, I'm excited to hear how your tube version comes out. 8) phil

Wow, Phil, that's amazing! For me, The Day the Earth Stood Still is the geatest sci-fi film of all time, and the theremin played a huge part in it. In the film interviews, Shure plays down his role in making the soundtrack but I think it's some of the best film work ever. It's just uncannily good, and the way it brings the cheesy props to life really makes the film.

If I could afford it- and find one- I'd love to have one of those old Moog units. But I'm sure I'll get more out of making one. I'd better get busy or it'll never get built!

A Theremin in the right hands (or should I say, near the right hands) is incredible:

In the wrong hands it is like slow painful death. Go hang out in a beginning violin class for an idea.

I just want to make sure no one thinks I can play the theremin in the correct way like Paul or Clara Rockmore. I can extract some interesting sounds out of it though. In the Manatees I would play it with my head and body while playing guitar. If you ever find one of our cd's both have theremin on a few songs. The first is Snackin' With The Manatees and the second is Swamp Thang!, it was before the speaker. They are both on the Orange Recording label. Phil

Somebody is selling a simplified version on eBay that somehow works with a big giant photocell. I'm thinking somewhere around $50. If I installed that on the body of my bass... :P

Have you seen any of the ZVex Probe (fuzz, wah, or trem) effects? They're foot pedals with a copper plate that acts like a theremin antenna to control the effect.

Colin

Thanks for the piece, and welcome! The day is steady approaching when all I do will be to watch little Belgian girls put on their makeup and compare second-generation amplifier tone and flying second-hand tone generation.... :? Gotta take a nap.

When they finally schlepp my reeking carcass out of here, as YouTube splutters on the dimming screen, the mouse still clutched in my cold dead claw, have a drappie in my memory
