Eddie Hazel

Post by BTF »

I've owned some Funkadelic albums over the years, including "Maggot Brain". Still, after seeing this clip I realize that not seeing them live was something I really messed up on.

I've really been digging Eddie's playing on this clip:

Any other Hazel fans out there?

In that video he was using four Music Man HD130 heads driving JBL-equipped cabinets! He ran the master and gain at 10. Notice the 70's approved Alembic Strat-O-Blaster on the Strat!

I can only imagine having to pass by that stack during the shows. I think 'd have asked Clinton to allow me to stand on the opposite side of the stage.

I would loved to have seen that show. Glen Goins (no Strat slack himself), Michael Hampton ("Hey Michael, I think we got a groove over here, come and get some"... ) and Eddie!

ToneMerc: That album is my next must-have acquisition! His version of "California Dreaming" is excellent! Have you ever seen the episode of "Homicide" where the murderer killed his friend because he put a scratch on the killer's copy of that rare album? :D

I'm planning on some Hazelification of my playing in the weeks to come...

My pleasure! I've worn that video out this week since finding it.

I own a couple of Funkadelic albums, but they are apparently post-Eddie ("One Nation..."). I didn't realize what I was missing. Kid Funkadelic and Garry Shider are great as well, but Eddie just does it for me.

I have all the Westbound ones except the last two, which I don't really count as the glory years, plus some live stuff and tributes. For the backline rentals the P-Funk All Stars used to request 5 Marshall half stacks, 100W head were first choice.

Yes, in Guitar Player's article on the guitarists for Funkadelic, Clinton mentions that only Marshalls need apply for their backline. I've got to dig that issue out and read up on Eddie.

"Pray My Soul" on Funkcronomicon by Axiom Funk (pretty much = P-Funk) was the last thing he recorded and pretty epic.
