They're thinking two things:
1) Their outrageously insensitive behavior gets lots of publicity.
2) There is no such thing as bad publicity.

The Westboro Baptist Church illustrates how fascism exists at both extreme ends of the political spectrum. Any group (far left or right) that thinks they should dictate what's best, and right, for everyone else has their head in a dark and unsanitary place.
