Re: If you could...
Remember when the Maytag guy started doing Geritol commercials then Ex-Lax commercials then he died and his wife was in a life insurance commercial?
No. It never happened but I choose to remember it this way.

Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

Yes! I remember those commercials fondly. They were the best commercials I never saw. Very effective too! I have cupboards full of old Geritol, Ex-Lax (does Ex-Lax expire?), and out-of-date insurance policies.
Re: If you could...
Just did!
Had a beer with James McMurtry last week. (he was drinking wine)
IMHO, he's really one of the best lyricists working today, and a pretty darn good guitarist. We talked about fishing.

Buddy Whittington - if he drank a beer
And I would finally get him to show me the correct chords to "Stevie Rave On"

Speekin 'o the dead....
I did, however, smoke LOTS of pot and had a few beers w/ Larry Rhinehardt and Lee Dorman when we did FOH for them in a hippy trippy Iron Butterfly tour back in the 80s. Learned a LOT about the Captain Beyond sessions
and how much of a fucking loser stoner Rod Evans was.
And I did have a beer w/ Peter Hammill (VDGG) back in '89....he was really cool....(and he's not dead yet).
I miss the 80s

Don't overthink it. Just drink it.

I bet Johnny Cash could have told a few stories too, just don't call him Sue.

Re: If you could...
Lefty - dinner party with David Bowie? Done that! Let's start at the beginning, recording session at Mountain Studio Montreux, first full day I was there (2 Oct 1986) we took a break and had cheeseburgers & beer across the street at Big Ben bar, sitting at a sidewalk booth. About 9 - 10 days later, dinner party at the only Mexican restaurant in town, a secret spot that didn't even have a sign. Excellent food and everybody had zabaglione for dessert. Also played soccer with him in Australia. A very smart fellow and he "turns on" the stage personality only for the stage & camera.
cbass, wine is the beverage for either Hall or Oates. Better bring the x-pensive plonk for Hall. Nothing less than $75 a bottle street price. Don't discount Oates, he's a hell of a guitarist, very under-rated, and a real mensch & dedicated family man. Without quotes.
Now if I could swill a couple of good bitters with Gary Brooker - OK he's not a guitarist - but I want to pry from him the sources of some themes in early Procol Harum albums. One lucky day some years ago I found out by luck the coda of "Whaling Stories" was lifted from the finale of Brahms' "Ein Deutsches Requiem." On another lucky day while standing at the coffee corner in Bearsville Studios I got to quiz Robin Trower about how he got his awesome guitar tones on those first 5 Procol albums. "I was just using a Gibson guitar (LP presumably) through an old Fender amp." Turned up to twelve no doubt. Assistant engineer Chris Michie relates that Robin used a small Selmer amp - similar to a Champ - as a preamp in some sessions.
For both Lefty & Cbass, Hunter Thompson was John Oates' next door neighbor. Got some stories about that, for another time... Small world, innit?

Re: If you could...
That's pretty awesome, Leo.
I'm not sure I would have wanted to live too close to Hunter S. Thompson. I'd hate to get hit by a stray bullet.
I thought of another guy I'd love to have a beer with, Eddie Kramer. Might like to have a hypnotist handy to coax out forgot memories of Hendrix' gear use in all his recording sessions.

Re: If you could...
Mrs. Oates once told me she was out walking the dog at dusk when Hunter let loose with the lead. He thought he saw a wolf, and you know he kept peacocks, got into "protect the livestock" mode, may have had a few beverages in him. Didn't hit anything thank goodness. Hunter called the Oates' right afterward & apologized.LeftyStrat wrote:I'm not sure I would have wanted to live too close to Hunter S. Thompson. I'd hate to get hit by a stray bullet.
John sometimes wears a "Gonzo" T-shirt on stage.
Hold onto your hat Lefty. I did a recording project with Ed Kramer (1982) and since then he called me to Dreamland Studio (Kingston NY) to repair some Marshalls for another band he was recording, "The Power Trio From Hell." Fixed more Marshalls for another Kramer session with Ace Frehley. Fixed Luxman tubed power amps for his home stereo too. File the next under "Relics of the Saints:" got a cracked plexiglas pickguard from a Vinnie Bell Coral Sitar once owned by Jimi that Ed gave to Peter Frampton. After Peter had the pickguard replaced, he discarded the original, & I did a little dumpster diving. Haven't heard much from Ed lately but I know he has at least one big book of photos for sale, plus sells photos from his website. Check out some of those photos, you'll probably see a Twin Reverb plus the usual suspects as far as pedal effects.LeftyStrat wrote:I thought of another guy I'd love to have a beer with, Eddie Kramer. Re: If you could...
I feel just fortunate enough to have met Joe Bonamassa and met Angus Young but Angus was too darn tired after the show to hang out.
Jeff Healey's bass player led Jeff right to me and my buddy Dale we drank beer with him and talked, he was a lot fun. That fun ended when some damn chick thought she was being cute wanting Jeff's autograph and pulled his hand down to her ass. Jeff got pissed and told her off.
Since I was young I've always wanted to meet Chuck Berry if he promises to be nice.
