A friend of mine brought by two TR5 studio monitors a few days ago. He said that they developed this terrible hum after a recent lightning storm. When power is applied to them (with no audio input) they hum. They continue to hum even if the power switch is turned off!
Is there an obvious fix here? I usually work on vintage tube amps, so this is a little different to me. Anybody know where to get a schematic? Or even a new amp module? I contacted EE, but haven't heard back from them yet. Thanks!

Tube amps ARE instruments. Is yours in tune?
Re: Event Electronics TR5 Monitor Issue
if they are anything like the KRK, Mackie, or Genelec self powered monitors your kinda screwed. The way the PCB's are assembled you would need a rework station an extra set of hands and access to parts.
It's probably a faulty Opamp or Fet. that went south from a voltage spike. I'd also suggest replacing the filter caps and any parts directly in contact with the fet or Opamp.
It's probably going to need a new circuit board. to the tune of $300+
sorry for the bad news. I've just been down this road more then I wish.
Send the company an email requesting the schematic for the make and model along with a quote for the replacement board (make sure you include the correct model / version of the board, or you may end up with a missmatch stereo image.) include your contact information in the event they need to talk or gather your credit card information.
if you can find a contact number dial .. hit# or zero and prompt to the operator and ask for technical service or parts.

I rarely take in professional audio equipment to work on. It's designed in such a way that you aren't meant to replace parts as much as an entire PCB where the fault occurred. This is just another way for companies to make money..

agreed but it's mostly to quickly troubleshoot and get you back up and running. you keep an extra module on hand. plug play keep paying the bills.
