I do like ribbons, but really only 44s or 77x.

I am a 47, 48, 67/87 guy. 121s sound like fast 57s, and a tad more.. umm.. sterile. I don't use more than one close mic.

It's VERY uncommon for me to put a 421 with anything, except the accessories in the mic cabinet. ;)
The 421 is fantastic on horns, percussion, toms, and even not a bad vocal mic.

I have a couple RCA 44 ribbons I really like using a single one as a room mic and squashing the kahjesus out of it with a shure level loc and feeding it back into the drum mix. other then that, they are a bit dark for my taste.
If you get a chance you should try a AKG C24 (instant "IT") on overheads. I tend to shy away from putting my U47's or U67's on a drummer, they are best used on vocals, C12 for female. It's hard to go wrong with U87 or the 414eb. I might like the 421 better then the Sony C37 on horns it's a toss up. The C800g is a whicked sweet mic. I love it in stereo on the piano.
I really like the tone of the U47feti on kick drum but most of the drummers are to heavy footed and better suited for an RE20 or D12e

oh well it all depends on the source and the end result. Let me know if you have any mics collecting dust I'll put them to work.

I have the enviable or not so enviable position where I get to run tour artists
on dog pile gear in more than a half dozen less then adequate venue
on a shoe string, on a venerable analog mish mash O crap

soft seat mid week between anchor gigs, keeps the artist busy for the visa duration

the Adat actually is a step towards better expectations, crazy...

still have to experience the practicalities, but the 50 bucks is a step forward.
a quick grab that's more flexible than the board mix for the room.

the lack of budget that forces one to adat is a strange reality. fun fun fun

live mix is the only way to go, the only way left to the artist since the digital reformation.

Had a chance to mix horns a couple weeks back, what a blast
sweated the horns more than the chick singer, I caught the same act a
few seasons past on a board mix took the tech three tune into the set to
bring up the brass, screw the vox, funk with a three pieces of brass
funny where you lay out your priorities...

Akai made the older Dr4 series, which came in a 4 or 8 track config , would take a smpte or mtc card for sync and a hard disk for the "medium". A great unit that worked everytime, just like a hard disk system should. Easy to operate, instant shuttle to set locate points and cheap as hell now when you find them.

We all have our ways. 47 on bass drums.. 421s are good on some horns, but I am not doing horn sections very often, and then I have something else.

Check out your 44s on the sides of Deluxes, or Supers. Almost touching the wood. No other mic.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

it's been almost 10 years since ADAT's

Do you know who had the only artist to have a hit album recorded on ADAT was? I'll give you two clues. It's a she, and her drummer now plays in the Foo Fighters.
Pearl Jams' "Ten" was recorded on 2 adat decks. Album sounded huge! Les Claypool still uses ADATs

Well then I'm mistaken. I had a discussion with an individual who was trying to push some ADATs and he had said such misinformation. I'm certainly not doubting your credentials given your location and profession. :o

I've seen so many ADAT based studios here in town that I would be shocked if there were not anything recorded on them

My wife's Aunt's best friends own Bear Creek It's really a great place to record. Cool vibe, vintage gear.

Most of the seattle sound was recorded at Bear creak, Studio X, Bad animal (before it turned post production), Avast, not counting early subpop 8 track otari / ramsa mixer recordings likes Nirvana's Bleach.

Adat is kind of the best of all things not great.

- real time formatting
- digital pop's
- to many passes of punch in's = loss of tone and artifacts
- need regular cleaning
- difficult to since midi even with the large BRC remote

The plus side. The tape was $20 for 8 tracks in stead of $200 of 2" reel.

Adat can make a great demo, it's all about the player, gear, room and equipment. Just most places that ran adat were not running a Neve vintage console with top shelf microphones, in a tuned room. Most had mackie boards, a garage, and a handful of stage mics.

Thats way cool! I've always dreamed of recording there. I grew up in Spanaway WA, Its about 8 miles south of Tacoma. Growing up there as a kid was pretty cool. Played in bands with the locals since I was 15. Have some good friends in bands tat are getting quite a bit of exposure up there now. High Noon Horizon, Sons of Ivan, The Missionary Position, and a few others. I'm a big Jack Endino fan. He was just discussing finishing up Barrett Martins new album.

Nice, I've seen those guys play a few times. A show I really can recall was when they did a KISW Jampak show with Second Coming, Love Battery and Eleven. Awesome show! It was to debut the new material for the album "Spanaway", ironically enough. When they announced the name of the album me and all of my friends went crazy! Good times. Spent alot of time hanging out at Rick Kings place when I was a kid. You know Guitar Maniacs in Tacoma? That guy has some crazy vintage cool stuff, and a pretty sweet studio from what I've heard. An old friend of mine picked up an early Matchless DC 30 from Rick. That was my first experience getting to play thru an amp that had some crazy "mojo". Surely something you never forget. What an amazing amp, A few years later I had played through another one the sounded sterile in comparison. Think the build date was in 92' on Travis' DC 30.

Ah the Love mongers - AKA Heart they used to own Bad animal / studio X was Alice in Chain's Mike Star playing with the mongers when you saw them?

Is guitar maniacs on the pacific highway? The name Rick is ringing a bell but it is a popular name? 5'10" long dark curly hair kind 80's metal?

If it was a music shop open in the 90's I'm sure in it at some point.

I grew up in Olympia, luckily with friends that had older brothers and cool rocker parents that thought it was fun to drive north and cruise music stores and pawn shops on the weekends.

The early 90's era of Matchless had the Swanson mojo, he lost interest around ~'94 plus money issues and moved on to Black Cat in the late 90's. I really like the Chiefton, and clubman. The DC30 kicks but when A/B'd to a '64 Vox Top boost it's second place.
