The 421 is fantastic on horns, percussion, toms, and even not a bad vocal mic.Reeltarded wrote:121s are for percussion, or fok drum mics here. I have used them in a likeable way on a decca tree over a small section.. but..
I do like ribbons, but really only 44s or 77x.
I am a 47, 48, 67/87 guy. 121s sound like fast 57s, and a tad more.. umm.. sterile. I don't use more than one close mic.
It's VERY uncommon for me to put a 421 with anything, except the accessories in the mic cabinet.
I have a couple RCA 44 ribbons I really like using a single one as a room mic and squashing the kahjesus out of it with a shure level loc and feeding it back into the drum mix. other then that, they are a bit dark for my taste.
If you get a chance you should try a AKG C24 (instant "IT") on overheads. I tend to shy away from putting my U47's or U67's on a drummer, they are best used on vocals, C12 for female. It's hard to go wrong with U87 or the 414eb. I might like the 421 better then the Sony C37 on horns it's a toss up. The C800g is a whicked sweet mic. I love it in stereo on the piano.
I really like the tone of the U47feti on kick drum but most of the drummers are to heavy footed and better suited for an RE20 or D12e
oh well it all depends on the source and the end result. Let me know if you have any mics collecting dust I'll put them to work.
