It looks to me like part of what you are after is the "experience" of having an amp built custom for you. Otherwise, you'd just go out and buy one. That's very cool cause that's what life is all about...experiences...not stuff.
Given that, I think having a eastern European-electronics-whiz-polka-guy build a guitar amp sounds like a fun experience!
I think i'd rather have someone like this build me one than some amp guru build it. (nothing personal, Doc...I LOVE your amps!...how in the hell do you get those designs so hum-free???)
and who knows...coming from his background...outside the box so to speak, he might come up with something unique to us.
What sort of tone, power, touch sensitivity, etc. are you after? Maybe we can make some recomendations for the design to pursue.
Non-musician builder?

Well, I'm more about saving money at this point in time, than in it for "the experience" (i.e. just barely scraping by). It would seem like one could follow the schematics posted here and build a quality boutique-type amp with a beautiful tone, without paying boutique prices.KellyBass wrote:It looks to me like part of what you are after is the "experience" of having an amp built custom for you. I'm useless with schematics and soldering guns and, just by chance, heard about this friend of a friend who's into building/fixing electronic/electrical items, who also really isn't into music very much. I'm in Winnipeg, Canada, and don't know of any amp builders in this neck of the woods.
And judging by a lot of the posts here, a fair amount of you are guitarists and I somehow thought that might be the "magic missing ingredient" in these custom amps that you guys build (correct me if I'm wrong, or have pie-in-the-sky notions of all of this).
I don't have a lot of money in my budget for guesswork. So if I pursue this, I'm going to only want to do it once. Tone wise, it's hard to describe what I'm looking for. Sort of a mish-mash of Stones era Mick Taylor, Mayall era Peter Green, Cream era Clapton (and some David Gilmour thrown in there); i.e. that full bodied singing sustain they all seemed to get. I wish I could describe it better.
I play mostly at home but may (if I finally get a decent amp) return to live playing, although it's been ages. If any of the Trainwreck and/or Dumble clones mentioned in The Garage seem to fit what I'm describing (and yes, my description is kind of lame), I'd be open to all opinions, either about type of amps or going for a muscially inclined (or dis-inclined) builder. Thanks.
