Old greenies

Post by azatplayer »

ooohhhh, i just picked up a quad full of pre rolas on fleabay.

I saw this crappy old, hell and back quad for sale, seller stating the 75's had been removed well before he got it in the mid 90's, with greenbacks.

Well on the pics, it was plain as day they were pre rola, so i asked if he had a buy it now, he did.. so i asked to play thru them, i did..

Upon inspection tho, my fears were verified, 2 of them in the pics had 1777 stamp in bright white on the cones, the top two, nothing. Also the 2 stamped ones had crayon writing on them.I suspected they were recones, and they were.
The other 2 are untouched pulsonic 003 ones, woohoo! Anyways, i played my 71' JMP SL/A thru them(2 tubes pulled) and the tone was awesome. I have a cab full of 10 year old reissues that sound nothing like these things. In fact i have some chinese ones that sound just like the reissues. But nothing like pre rolas.
There was no cone cry or rub, just sweet tone. The baskets were all from the same original quad, matching numbers, and the 2 recones have the celestion kits in them and sound killer. They have the larger dust caps, and he had no idea, so that makes the recone job over 13 years old anyways. The cab used to belong to a local here, Jack Jones, and this guy is a known player too, so its een a LOT of playing.
Always a risk with old speakers, but i had told him i would pay 900 if they were original, when i saw it i offered him 700, he declined, took his chances, i got it for 675.. im a happy camper ;)

Just because the reconed speakers have large dust caps doesn't mean they are any particular age. Many reconers have access to large and standard size dust caps for kits (at least my two do), and they wouldn't have been standard issue, or with the correct Celestion recone kit.

But for the price you paid, you did real well if two are original and sound great, the rest is just a bonus. Nice score.

Actually Jim it was with your info i gleaned on TGP, that gave me all i needed when i had a look at them, great resource. I really dont need any more speakers... but they were there..
What i was trying to get before these was a funny looking column stack, 4 in a row above each other of transition rola greenies. They looked absolutely mint too. The pics showed precisely the ones you had of the first label from rola. I asked him if he had buy it now price, the listimng had m=been going for days and no bids, start money of 750. He pulled the auction shortly after... bugger.
Im gonna fill this old box up with my reissues and put it back out there. I really dont need 2 quads..

oh, my bad sentence structure, i meant that he had had it for 13 years and had done no work on them, so the recone was at least that age, nothing to do with dust caps. My son is a lit major, he would have stoned me for that!
