Back in the early seventies we didn't have all of the equipment available to us that we have now. These young whipper-snappers today don't know how good they have it when it comes to sound reinforcement. We were lucky to have a old Shure Vocal master 6 channel head for just vocals and a couple of speaker columns. The drums and guitars were'nt miked through the PA system. No Snakes, Effects racks full of processors and such. So there was no using a 20 watt amp and miking it through your 5000 watt PA. We always wanted to save up for a couple of Altec Voice of the Theater cabs but ended up building our own snake and tri-amped PA system from scratch. You needed a 100 watt amp to get loud. Like I said, the good ole days.srubelva59 wrote:What?UR12 wrote: Very little PA, masive stacks, nothing miked

Man I heard that. My first band had a Shure Vocal Master PA. What an underpowered POS it was! I remember looking at it's columns and thinking "Why is it so distorted?"
Ahh, the good old days...August 74 for me and my first pro gig...the Riverside County Fair.

Your project brings back memories from the Whiskey A Go Go.

Hey I have a pair of those in my basement! With the nice oak cabinets too! LOL!!UR12 wrote:We always wanted to save up for a couple of Altec Voice of the Theater cabs ....
I played in a cover band back in the early 80s and most bars/clubs had those noise warning signs posted, "Prolonged exposure to loud music may permanently damage your hearing". I remember thinking.. yea right!
Fast forward 28 years and my current favorite amp is a 16 watt cuz I can get great tone at a volume that doesn't actually cause pain my left ear drum! My left ear was facing the drummers cymbals for three years and I'n convinced that's what did it.
But still, that big stack looks sweet!!!
Re: When you just have to either go big...or go home...
Being a drummer for all those years it's a wonder I can hear anything. I always had cymbals in my ears. For some reason they always put the bass rig right behind me and I had 300 watts of bottom end jarring my guts out all night to bootsrubelva59 wrote: Hey I have a pair of those in my basement! Jim, yea the Vocal masters sucked. your other choice back then, the Bogen's were even worse

I'm pretty sure we used a Univox four channel tube amp PA with reverb of course and columns. Also ran Standel head with 3-15 cab didn't have a Marshall darn it.

Back in the late 70s, I was using a Marshall 18 watter. Perfect level then, perfect level now.
I remember using a borrowed Plexi half-stack one night, and soiling myself.
I also remember seeing Alvin Lee in '72 lining up in front of a wall of Marshalls. However, if one followed the cable from his 335, this is where it was plugged in....[img:440:419]http://www.vintagehofner.co.uk/britamps ... dom2g.jpeg[/img]

Very interested in how the tall 412 works out. I've been eying one that a smaller builder has out. And I'm not a stack sorta guy, or really even a half-stack sort.

Jimmy Page also used the WEM amps when touring with Zep.

Let you know later this week. I've finished so many cabs I ran out of speaker wire, and had to get another 100 ft roll to do my own. Typical... the builder gets the clients taken care of before his own stuff.Bear wrote:Very interested in how the tall 412 works out. I've been eying one that a smaller builder has out. I've got a WEM/Watkins ER-40 like Zep had for their backline on that TV show. It's amazing how much it sounds like a good tube amp, it's solid state! PhilStructo wrote:Jimmy Page also used the WEM amps when touring with Zep.
